Uncertainty over Government formation ends | PDP-BJP formal talks going on | | Bashir Assad
Early Times Report
Jammu, Jan 5: For the first time since the election results were declared, the two major political parties PDP and BJP, Monday confirmed officially that the formal talks were going on between the two for government formation. Both PDP and BJP today officially confirmed that the formal talks were going on and that the parties are ready to form the coalition government in the state. Amid reports that PDP leaders Muzaffer Hussain Baigh and Haseeb Drabu had the first round of structured dialogue with BJP leadership in New Delhi on Monday, both parties came out with statements that they were working out the arrangement for government formation in the state. Interestingly it was also for the first time that the two parties did not talk about options indicating clearly that the other options available for both the parties have been closed. PDP chief spokesperson Nayeem Akhtar said his party was ready to form the government in Jammu and Kashmir with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on issue-based agreements. Akhtar was talking to Headlines Today even as the BJP top brass held a discussion with the party's state leaders in New Delhi to discuss government formation. He said that formal talks are on with the BJP and the PDP has put its demands forward to the saffron party. "Let the BJP decide," he added. Akhtar said the PDP wants to end tension along the border and that it was for trade with Pakistan, not terror and tension. "We want Vajpayee's mission be taken forward," the PDP leader said referring to its alliance with the BJP at the Centre in the past. The BJP and the PDP have been exploring various possibilities for government formation since election results on December 23 threw up a hung Assembly. The PDP emerged as the single largest party winning 28 seats, followed by BJP's 25, National Conference's 15 and the Congress 12 seats. The BJP has decided to continue talks with PDP over government formation in Jammu and Kashmir. Speaking to reporters after the core group meeting of J&K unit of BJP, party general secretary Ram Madhav said that the core group has decided to take the talks forward with PDP for forming the new government in the state. "In view of the mandate of the people, we have decided to continue the talks with PDP," said Ram Madhav. "PDP has taken some initiatives and we are considering all aspects," added Madhav. When asked to clarify BJP's stand on AFSPA in view of PDP's stand on the issue, Madhav said, "let the issue figure in the talks first." Meanwhile in a major development the former secretary, Government of India, Amitabha Pande has called the PDP's document of 'Self Rule' one of the most well-crafted political documents'.
