10 yrs on; Tourism Deptt, JKTDC fail to absorb professionals | Youth losing interest in tourism courses | | Bijay Charak
Early Times Report
Jammu, Jan 5: The high profile Tourism department and Jammu and Kashmir Tourism Development Corporation (JKTDC) have not employed a single person during the past decade. Sources told Early Times scores of young people who qualified various courses in tourism from Jammu and Kashmir universities during the past 10 years have lost hope about them being absorbed by the department or the Corporation. Pertinently, Government of Jammu and Kashmir had established directorate of Tourism as well as Jammu and Kashmir Tourism Development Corporation in 1988 and in the same year the department and the corporation filled the vacant posts. Sources said after 25 years state government created six posts of Assistant Tourist Officer (ATO) and in 2005- 06 the state government established 28 Tourism Development Authorities (TDA) but did not fill the vacant posts. Criticizing state government, Neha Sharma, a student of Jammu University said, "If the eligibility of Assistant Tourist Officer is Bachelor's degree in any field then why are Jammu and Kashmir universities offering Masters Degree in tourism." She said in Jammu University Masters of Tourism course started in 2001, hundreds of youth after acquiring the Master's degree are unemployed till date. "Employees working in Tourism Department and JKTDC have no professional qualification due to which the state has failed to showcase the tourism potential of the state across the country and the world," Sharma said, "If tourism department fails to devise a strategy to attract the tourists there is every possibility of number of tourists visiting Jammu and Kashmir witnessing a steep decline in coming years." Raj Kumar, 28, a diploma holder said JK has vast tourism potential but the department's failure to employ new faces has created a void. "There is a hell lot of difference between professionals and non-professionals," he said. Kumar said failure of the Tourism department to create employment opportunities is making youth lose interest in Hospitality and Tourism Management (H&TM) courses. He claimed only 14 candidates had opted for H&TM courses across the state in various polytechnic colleges last year. "If the government has no plan to absorb the trained youth, then why is government wasting money on such courses and ruining the future of students," he rued. Despite repeated attempts the Director Tourism didn't pick up the phone. |
