'Controversies' in Edu Deptt cast shadow over strengthening of Govt schools

Jammu, Jan 5: Controversies, that erupted in Education Department when ex-Chhamb MLA Tara Chand was its minister, have cast a shadow over the overall strengthening of infrastructure of schools which is evident from the slow pace of works being done in the department.
The Physical Progress Report for the year 2014-15 for the schools of Jammu and Kashmir, a copy of which is with Early Times, says that Government of India approved 636 new schools for the state but ending October 2014, only 92 schools had been completed (14.47%) whereas the work on 246 schools is in progress and no work has been done for the remaining 298 schools.
The report further says that 305 Additional Class Rooms (ACR) were approved for the construction in the year 2014-15 of which 38 ACRs have been completed (12.46%) while work for 52 ACRs is in progress and the work is yet to be started on 215 ACRs.
As far as the construction of Science Labs is concerned, work on 254 science labs was approved by Government of India but so far only 19 science labs had been completed (7.48%) whereas the work is in progress on the 26 Science Labs and the state government is yet to start work on the remaining 209 Science Labs.
The report also says that 302 computer labs were approved for the year 2014-15 of which success has been achieved in the construction of just 19 labs (6.29%) while work on 26 labs is in progress and there was no work on 257 labs. Further if the report is analyzed in context of construction of Art and Craft Room, work was approved for 301 schools of which only 19 schools have achieved the target (6.31%) while work on labs in 26 schools is in progress and the work on remaining 256 school was yet to be taken in hand.
Construction work on 293 libraries was approved of which work on 19 libraries is completed (6.48%) while the work on 26 libraries is in progress and work on 248 libraries is yet to be started. Similarly, work on 474 toilets was approved and so far work on only 19 toilets has been completed (4.01%) while work on 26 toilets is in progress. The work on 429 toilets was yet to be taken into hand.
Drinking water facility was approved for 373 schools. The report says that work on only 19 water tanks is completed (5.09%) while work on 26 tanks is in progress and the work on 328 tanks is yet to be started.
