Why PDP reluctant to forge alliance with NC or Congress? | Govt formation | | Rustam
Early Times Report
JAMMU, Jan 5: On December 31, PDP president and Member of Lok Sabha Mehbooba Mufti claimed that her party had the support of 55 MLAs and, at the same time, stated that the 28-MLA PDP was not in a hurry to form government. She made this important statement after her meeting with the Governor NN Vohra in Jammu. A couple of days before, both the NC, which has 15 MLAs, and the Congress, which has 12 MLAs, offered their unconditional support to the PDP. The NC offered support saying the PDP, like it, was a regional party and the Congress offered support, saying it wanted to keep the BJP at bay. It was obvious that the claim of the PDP chief was based on the support NC and the Congress had extended to it. The PDP, the NC and the Congress share between them 55 seats. Reports from the Valley clearly suggest that the PDP is not very much interested in an alliance either with the NC or with the Congress. Why is the PDP reluctant to forge an alliance either with the NC or with the Congress? The answer is not far to seek. Neither the NC nor the Congress could help the PDP implement its political agenda - agenda which just cannot be implemented without the active support of the central government. Besides, the state government needs more money this time to rebuild parts of the state which were devastated by the September 2014 floods and heavy rains. The central government is headed by the BJP, and not by the Congress-led UPA of which the NC was a constituent. Even the chief spokesperson of the PDP, Nayeem Akhtar, has explained why the PDP would like do business with the party-in-power at the centre, subject to the condition that the central government will not force it to dilute its agenda or compromise its stand on what it had promised to the people of Kashmir during the elections. "That if only government formation would have been an issue they could have aligned with any party be it Congress, BJP or even National Conference. But the question is if we go with Congress or NC can we solve the issues which are in the domain of central government," he said only the other day. Making his point more clear, he further said: "Reconciliation, dialogue, cross-LoC trade, revocation of AFSPA and return of power projects are some of the basic issues which PDP has promised to people of the state. We could have forgotten what NC and Congress did with people of the state in last six year and in spite of their defeat we could have formed alliance with them. But is it possible to solve these issues if we go with Congress and NC". He even went to the extent of posing a question which reads like this: "Can we get back even one power project from the center if we go with NC or Congress?" He further explained his party's standpoint by saying that the "rehabilitation of flood victims in the state needs Rs 50 thousand crores" and neither the Congress nor the NC could arrange the required amount. He asked, "Can we get it if we go with NC or Congress?" All his should explain why the PDP is taking time. It is important to note that discussions between the PDP and the BJP leadership at the "top level" are on and the both the parties would take some more time to iron out their differences. After all, both the parties have to satisfy their core constituencies and hand down to the state a stable government. |
