Pak still obsessed with Kashmir | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Feb 7: Pakistan does not seem to be prepared to shed its obsession with Kashmir. That Kashmir is an obsession for Pakistan has remained evident from the way Islamabad and other political leaders, whether belonging to the ruling party or to the opposition, have been raking up the Kashmir issue every now and then. And as far as the extremists and fundamentalists in Pakistan are concerned they are seen indulging in breast beating whenever they rake up the Kashmir issue. And India had no other alternative but to reassert that J&K remains an integral part of the country and asked Pakistan not to desire for an area that never was and never will be its.New Delhi's strong reaction came after Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif described Kashmir as his country's "jugular vein" and vowed to continue political, moral and diplomatic support to Kashmiri people's struggle for the right to self determination. Sharif made these remarks at the joint session of Kashmir council in Muzaffarabad, capital of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, on the occasion of Kashmir Day that is observed annually in Pakistan. A series of events, including rallies by religious and political bodies, were organised in Pakistan to observe 'Kashmir Day'. Reacting sharply, External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin said: "Our view is that Pakistan's self-destructive and futile quest for territorial aggrandisement in J&K is well known to us...the entire state of J-K is and will always remain an integral part of the Indian union"."It's high time that Pakistan starts paying attention to all the problems that afflicts it rather than covet what is not theirs and never will be," said the spokesperson. What seems to have peeved New Delhi is the way Nawaz Sharif vowed to provide political, diplomatic and moral support to those in Kashmir who are engaged in Jehad. Sharif had expressed confidence that Kashmir will soon be free and that any decision in this regard will not be made without their consultation. "Our hearts beat with the hearts of our Kashmiri brothers. As a nation we express our sympathies with those who have lost their lives in the (Kashmir) dispute," he said."It has been more than 60 years and despite atrocities inflicted upon them, Kashmiris have not given up their struggle...the day is not far when Kashmir would be free," he said. Nawaz Sharif seems to lament over atrocities on people in Kashmir. While doing so has he tried to know the reason for the trouble in Kashmir? No,he has not done so.Had he examined the entire issue he would have come to the conclusion that the entire violence and bloodshed had been the result of Pakistan sponsored war against India in J&K. Knowing that any reference to the Kashmir issue can prove a red rag to the Indian bull Nawaz Sharif seems to needle India after he had been assured of hefty financial assistance from Washington and from Beijing. Can Nawaz Sharif expect New Delhi to reopen the channels of dialogue when as Prime Minister he has been promising moon to the people in Kashmir ? Certainly not.And the moment there is further delay in the resumption of bilateral dialogue Islamabad starts knocking the doors of the UN and Washington pleading for their mediation for settling the Kashmir issue.Hitherto, there has been no positive response from either the UN or from Washington because the two know that Pakistan has become a safe sanctuary for terrorists of different hues. |
