Cross LoC trade comes under cloud yet again, businessmen demand slew of measures | | | Shakeel A Khan
Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, Feb 7: Cross LoC trade between Jammu & Kashmir with Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (PoK) is under threat of being suspended. The incidents involving the smuggling of the heroine has given rise to the apprehensions even if the trade restarts it would not going to be a smooth sailing. In the fresh such incident eight kilograms of the heroin was recovered from a goods carrying vehicle bearing registration number 39627 coming from PoK. "Ever since the governments of the two neighbouring countries decided to go ahead with the cross LoC trade, people not only from the divided parts of the Kashmir felt relaxed but the people of both the countries sighed in relief that something has happened at last," said Bashir Ahmad, a businessman from the apple town, Sopore. As per Bashir, the trade of heroine in the cross LOC trade has begun to cast a bad shadow threatening the closure of this window between the two countries. Such incidents took place in the past as well and a result of that the much cherished trade was suspended for a long time giving rise to the hopelessness only. It is pertinent to mention here that last year a driver from PoK was apprehended by the police for carrying the internationally banned item. The arrest the driver from POK deepened the crisis between the two countries."Such an incident has no place in the civilized world more so when the cross LoC trade is going on between the two bitter neighbours. It makes no sense as to what made the authorities on that side to allow heroine to be loaded in the vehicle which had to cross over other country," said Abdul Rehman, an apple dealer from Baramulla. Rehman said that incident involving the smuggling of heroine is a cheap act and due to this not only the traders are going to suffer, but also the poor drivers who are ignorant about the items they are carrying in their vehicles. The authorities on this side have taken the driver into the custody and if the reports are to believed many drivers of this side have also been held up by the POK authorities giving painful moments to their families, say the people of the businessmen of the valley. Responding to the incident, President Kashmir Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCC&I), Sheikh Ashiq said that 'black sheep' are always there who are hell bent to harm the cross LoC trade or the general trade. He demanded that there should be fool proof mechanism so that these 'black sheep' get identified and brought to justice whether on this side or on other side of LoC. "A delegation of businessmen recently met the officials in the home ministry and demanded for installing the scanners. Hopefully would be installed in one month. Fruit worth crores of rupees is waiting for to be shifted and if yesterday's incident comes as a barrier the business community of Kashmir will suffer immensely," said KCC&I President. |
