Hakim Yasin, Tarigami, Er Rashid vote for Cong stalwart | Azad sails through, PDP bags 2 seats; BJP wins 1 | | RS Polls Results
Asif Iqbal Naik / Kunal Srivasta Early Times Report Jammu, Feb 7: Two independent MLAs Hakim Yasin and Er Rashid and lone CPI (M) MLA M Y Tarigami exercising their franchise in favour of the veteran Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad, Leader of Opposition (LoP) in Upper House of the Parliament, proved to be game changer in the Rajya Sabha polls in Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday as their votes ensured Azad's victory by a slender margin of two votes, while Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) won two seats and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) bagged one seat. As per the details available with Early Times, on notification first, Fayaz Ahmed Mir of PDP, who had contested the recent assembly polls unsuccessfully from Kupwara, secured 56 votes (BJP 25, PDP 28, Independent Aga Bakir Rizvi, independent Pawan Gupta and two votes of Peoples Conference led by Sajad Lone) while Sajjad Ahmed Kichloo joint candidate of Congress and NC secured 29 votes (12 Congress, NC 15, Independent MLA Hakim Yaseen and one CPI (M) vote) and while Peoples Conference legislator opted for NOTA. On notification 2nd, Shamsher Singh Manhas of BJP secured 57 votes (BJP 25, PDP 28, independent Aga Bakir Rizvi, independent Pawan Gupta and two Peoples Conference votes), Nasir Aslam Wani of NC secured 29 votes. Though the fight on notification first and second was only a formality, but on notification 3rd all eyes were focused on the fate of former Chief Minister and Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad who bagged 30 votes (12 Congress, NC 15, independent MLA Hakim Yaseen, M Y Tarigami CPI (M) and important vote of independent Engineer Rashid) and managed to win with a slender matgin of two votes, which ultimately not only saved the Congress face in Jammu and Kashmir, but also saved the leader of opposition post for the Congress in Rajya Sabha . Azad's opponent BJP's Chander Mohan Sharma managed to secure 28 votes (25 BJP, 2 PC & Independent Pawan Gupta). On the fourth notification Nazir Ahmed Laway of PDP, who had contested the recent assembly polls unsuccessfully from Ku lgam also manage to win by securing 29 votes (28 PDP & 1 Independent Aga Bakir Rizvi). While talking to "Early times" The Returning Officer Mohammad Ramzan said that though BJP raised the objection on open declaration of vote in favour of Azad by independent MLA Engineer Rashid before media, but same was turned down. He also said that in another objection raised by the BJP on voting rights of newly elected MLAs who did not resign from Upper House, Ramzan said that under section 80 of Peoples Representative Act 1957, if any MLC elected as an MLA, his membership in Upper House automatically stands canceled. He added that assembly Secretariat in next few days would also issue notice of disqualification of all such members from upper house. Meanwhile defeat of BJP candidate Chander Mohan Sharma in today's election is big jolt to BJP ahead of its forming government in coalition with PDP in Jammu and Kashmir, as National Conference-Congress joint candidate Ghulam Nabi Azad got re-elected to Rajya Sabha defeating its one of the two candidates by a margin of two votes. The term of Azad who is Leader of the Opposition in Rajya Sabha was ending on February 19, 2015. It was just one vote of Engineer Rasheed, a non-aligned member, which tilted the balance in his favour while two other candidates who voted for Azad had already announced their decision to vote for Azad describing the BJP-PDP combine as "unholy alliance". While reacting on his victory, Azad described his re-election to Rajya Sabha as victory of secular forces, and added that Modi wave is artificial. "The same thing will happen in Delhi assembly elections where BJP is all set to lose. It is immaterial that how many seats Congress wins, but the downfall of Modi government has begun. What has happened here in Jammu and Kashmir will percolate to other places as well" added Azad. |
