SRINAGAR, Nov 18: Jammu district seems to have turned a safe haven for criminals as the winter capital tops the crime list in the state.
As many as 272819 incidence of crime cases have been reported from 2005 to 2015 in the state according to police records with Jammu district toping the crime rate followied by Srinagar district.
Heinous crimes, according to Jammu and Kashmir Police, include murder, attempt to murder, kidnapping or abduction, rape, molestation, cruelty by husband, causing hurt and rioting have increased, the police said.
Of the crime cases that got registered in last 11 years, Jammu district has topped the crime rate with 45042 cases followed by district Srinagar 34055, Rajouri 17694, Anantnag 17025, Baramulla 16357, Budgam 15042, Kuthua 13833, Udhampur 12136, Kulgam 8968, Doda 8915 Ramban 8220, Samba 7874, Kupwara 7655, Pulwama 7057, Reasi 6740 Handwara 5512, Poonch 4247, Ganderbal 5817, Awantipora 5188, Bandipora 4771, Shopian 4178, Kishtwar 2964 and rest in Kargil, Leh, Sopore, Railways Jammu, Railways Katra and others.
The police figures reveal that among the crime that have shown an upward trend are abduction, burglary, cattle theft, motor vehicle theft, molestation, rape and cheating.
A total of 272819 incidence of crime cases were reported from 2005 to 2015. Of which police registered 22850 cases in 2005, 23603 in 2006, 2007 23825, 2008 22549, 2009 24006, 2010 25272, 2011 26590, 2012 26558, 2013 26907, 2014 25390 and in 2015 25269 cases. These crimes fall in 47 categories of which 31 in RPC and rest in special laws.
Police said many of the crimes go unreported in the state either due to remoteness of the location or victims choosing to stay silent out of fear or social stigma attached to such exploitation.
A police official said people who commit any of the offences are booked under various section of the law. "Although police has been dealing with these crimes but the society and the parents have also a responsibility to create awareness in the society and educate their children so that they refrain from any of the crimes that occur in the state," the official said. |
