Anti Israel protests force Govt to announce early summer vacations for schools, colleges
7/15/2014 11:24:32 PM
Jehangir Rashid

SRINAGAR, July 15 : The state government virtually succumbed to the pressure exerted by the students in the form of anti-Israel protests and announced for the early closure of educational institutions including degree colleges on account of summer vacations.
On Monday (July 14) hundreds of students of schools and colleges came out in protest against the bombing of civilian areas in the Gaza strip by the Israeli forces.
The students raised slogans against Israel and condemned the action from its forces. The protesting students assembled near GhantaGhar (Clock Tower) and carried out vociferous sloganeering in support of their demands.
Hardly few hours later the state government announced that all the schools upto higher secondary school would close from July 15 to July 31. Hardly few minutes later there was yet another announcement from the state government according to which all the colleges of Kashmir division were ordered to be closed from July 15 to July 30.
The sudden announcement about the vacations came as a big relief to the students and teaching community who had not expected this thing to happen too early. They were expecting to hear this announcement only after July 20, but that was not to be.
According to the calendar drawn by the Directorate of School Education, Kashmir the summer vacations of the schools up to the higher secondary level is limited to 10 days. However, this time around the department officials have been too kind as the summer vacations would be for a period of 17 days.
The 10 day vacations in the past would start from July 20 or 21 and end after a period of 10 days. The vacations have been pre-poned by a week this time around much to the satisfaction of the student community.
As far as degree colleges are concerned these would observe 10 day vacations on account of summer break from the first week of August. The college students too have been benefitted by the 'generosity' of the state government. Colleges would remain closed for 16 days this year with the vacations pre-poned by more than two weeks.
If the things are analyzed in proper manner then one can safely say that the school department officials or for that matter the state government is not concerned about the health of students while taking a decision about the summer vacations or for that matter the winter vacations.
Director School Education, Kashmir, Tariq Ali Mir gave an impression that his department is worried about the heat conditions prevailing in the valley. He said this was the reason that summer vacations were announced for the schools up to higher secondary level. The Director should have accepted the reality rather than lying about this development.
Truth of the matter is that state government got nervy after the Monday's protests of students against Israeli action in Gaza strip.
The government higher ups wasted no time in announcing about the summer vacations while fearing more such protests in the coming days.
