Early Times Report
JAMMU, July 15: First list issued by the National Conference (NC) is a clear indication that ruling party has failed to find new faces for the coming Assembly polls. The party has almost repeated the same faces of 2008 assembly elections. Interestingly name of Omar Abdullah's ‘Man Friday’ Devender Singh Rana’s name is missing from the first list. The much awaited list included names of only those leaders who had successfully or unsuccessfully contested 2008 assembly elections.
Credible sources in the National Conference said that a number of leaders had approached to get party mandates but the leadership has decided not to take risk and decided to repeated the old guards, who were in the fray in 2008 elections.
Sources said that National Conference leadership was undecided over giving party mandate to Devender Singh Rana, who has been working for the last six years at Nagrota assembly segment where AjatShatru Singh had contested assembly election on NC mandate in 2008. Sources said that a group within the party has opposed candidature of Devender Singh Rana and suggested that AjatShatru Singh should be repeated. This group argued that repeating AjatShatru from Nagrota segment would give a message among Rajput community. AjatShatru Singh is almost inactive in Nagrota assembly segment, although he is member of the Legislative Council.
AjatShatru Singh, son of Dr Karan Singh, son of last Dogra ruler of Jammu and Kashmir, has strong following in Nagrota assembly segment. AjatShatru Singh had lost 2002 and 2008 assembly elections by narrow margin. He lost 2002 assembly elections by a narrow margin of just 72 votes. Despite strong BJP wave in 2008 assembly elections due to Amarnath land row, AjatShatru Singh had lost elections with narrow margin as compared to other candidates of National Conference. AjatShatru Singh had lost 2008 assembly elections due to sabotage by some NC men.
A group with in National Conference is believe that in the present situation, Ajay Shatru Singh is right bet on Nagrota assembly segment. This group is exerting pressure on party leadership not to try Devender Singh Rana on this seat and give mandate to only AjatShatru Singh from this seat.
