All is not well with ruling coalition, says Azad
7/16/2014 12:27:44 AM

JAMMU, July 15: All is not well with the ruling coalition in Jammu and Kashmir said senior Congress leader and former Union Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad during an interview to the correspondent of NewsX on Sunday. When asked if he was satisfied with the performance of the Omar Abdullah-led NC-Congress coalition Government, he neither commended the Government's performance nor criticized it. He only said, "it would not be proper for him to comment on the performance or otherwise of the State Government, as the Congress is part of it". In a way, he expressed his unhappiness over the working of the State Government. His vague response could undoubtedly be construed as an indictment not only of the NC, but also of the Congress, which has an equal number of Ministers in the Council of Ministers.
Azad not only thought it proper to give his assessment as far as the performance or otherwise of the State Government was concerned. He also said in unequivocal terms that the relations between the workers of the two parties got embittered, particularly after the NC and the Congress candidates suffered an ignominious defeat at the hands of the BJP and the PDP in the Lok Sabha elections. Azad himself, like Farooq Abdullah, suffered a massive defeat and lost his face.
In response to a straight question if the Congress would enter into a pre-poll alliance with the NC, Azad, instead of giving a straight answer, said that the workers of both the parties have been accusing each other of being dishonest, as also of not transferring votes the NC candidates and the vice-versa. He talked about this aspect not once, but at least thrice. It was clear from his response that workers of both the parties are opposed to the idea of their parties entering into any kind of pre-poll alliance.
Azad was absolutely right. It is a fact that neither the Congress workers at the grassroots level nor the NC workers did anything to get their votes transferred to the coalition candidates in both Jammu province, Kashmir and Ladakh. There were even reports that certain leaders of both the parties worked against the coalition candidates. There were also reports that leaders like Azad lost the election because of "internal sabotage".
It is now almost clear that bulk of the local Congress leadership and workers do not want any kind of truck with the NC, as they believe that pre-poll alliance would only benefit the NC in Jammu province and also harm the Congress in Kashmir, where its support-base is already limited. But their opinion doesn't really matter. It would be the Congress high command comprising Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi who would take final decision on the issue. Both Sonia and Rahul are favorably inclined towards the NC leadership in general and Omar Abdullah in particular.
