Demands resolution to condemn Israel strikes on Gaza

Early Times Report

JAMMU, July 15: Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has definitely turned the tables on chief minister Omar Abdullah and his National Conference with its presence in LokSabha despite being numerically insignificant in the 543-member Parliament House.
PDP president Mehbooba Mufti raised the issue of the Israel strikes on Gaza and expressed concern over the killing of 'innocent' people. She vociferously demanded that the House should pass a resolution to condemn the attacks and expressed sympathy with the bereaved families.
Mehbooba, who was MP earlier also, making a strong point, said though her party had only three members in the LokSabha, the Centre should hear their voices and respond to the protests in Srinagar against the Israel attacks.
Even as the Speaker repeatedly asked her to take her seat, she continued to speak to make her point. The issue of raising of the protests in Srinagar by her in a way came as a strong rebuttal of the CM's assertions that PDP legislators didn't protect the interests of the Kashmir region when an IIT was allotted to Jammu region. On the other side, the NC MPs in their previous term were never found raising any issue concerning Kashmir and whenever they did so, they did it when the parliament was debating the Kashmir issue. The PDP, though raised the issue concerning the constituency it represents, has in the so early stage of the government shown signs of its conviction to its ideology. It is in strong contrast to the previous NC MPs. PDP by raising 'human' issue had also reflected that the party intends to use the platform of Parliament rather than ending up being a laughing stock, which the CM had "suggested".
IITs are allotted to a state but entry into them is through an All India competitive test. There is no provision of any quota in them for the students of that state. They too have to pass the test for admission in them. There is NIIT in Kashmir but people of the Jammu have not protested as there is no logic in it. The allocation of an institution only helps in the development of the region which Jammu rightly deserves and for its development, former CM Mufti Mohammad Sayeed had given special attention.
