Samba, July 15: Overloading in public transport is going on unchecked in the district, the menace is posing a threat to the lives of commuters while locals alleged the overloading and violations of traffic rules have increased road accidents but authorities concerned have failed to curb the menace of overloading.
With sheer greed to make extra money the local buses and mini-bus operators violate the traffic norms and accommodate more passengers than the actual capacity.
A local from Samba alleged that despite some fatal accidents the concern department seems to be casual and have turned a blind eye towards the menace.
Another passenger said most of the times matadors are seen overloaded, especially in Samba to Sumb route, Samba to Bainglar route, Samba to Mansar route, Samba to Vijaypur route and other internal routes along National Highway.
"The overloading is on peak during the morning at school/office timing and at the evening when schools close and students are huddled in these small mini buses while many are seen hanging with the doors and some are seen clung to rear side of the mini buses, another lamented. "Not only this even the autos plying to interior areas are also seen overloaded to the capacity most of times, some said alleging, "besides overloading the rash driving too has also become a nuisance for public."
Another commuter rued the minibuses can be seen racing with the each other with desire to lift more passengers at next bus stop, as there is no one from concerned department seemed to dare to check this. "The directions of the authorities concerned have least impact on vehicle operators and strict action is required against them," Vikram Singh a collegiate said. "Drivers defy traffic rules and put the safety of passengers at stake. Even the traffic department seems to have turned a blind eye towards the violations," said Singh. Majority of the commuters have alleged that there was a nexus between these operators and the department thus except traffic weeks twice a year no one comes to rescue the passengers from overloading. "Mini bus operators keeping in view that they (commuters) are dependent upon them in the complete absence of government hand in public transport sector act as 'dictator' they don't move from one stop to other till they are overloaded and second vehicle horn-honks the vehicle on stand, Shayam Singh another local alleged further adding that despite various road accidents the things have not improved till date as authorities are in slumber.
