As excess withdrawal leads to power crisis, NRPC sanctions scheme to compensate losses | | | Mudasir Tariq
SRINAGAR, Aug 17: The Kashmir valley faces serious power crisis both in summer and winter and the authorities blame the excessive withdrawal of reactive power from Northern Grid for the power miseries being faced by the people. Sources said that reactive consumption is required to be reduced for improvement of quality, lowering of energy purchase bills and improvement of generation capabilities of power houses. In the meantime, Northern Regional Power Committee (NRPC) has sanctioned a scheme of Rs. 22 crore for reactive power compensation in the State. Experts believe that there is an excessive withdrawal of reactive power which causes a consequent poor system voltage and operation of generating station with less generation capability. A document by the State Electricity Regulatory Commission (SERC) reads that the drawl of excessive reactive energy form the Northern Grid has increased the power purchase bill of the state over the years. "The drawl of excessive reactive energy form the Northern Grid has increased the power purchase bill. So NRPC has already sanctioned a scheme at a cost of Rs. 22 crores for reactive compensation in the state. Through this scheme, the reactive power will be compensated which in turn will improve the quality of electricity," reads the document. The document further reads that the scheme stands implemented at 33 KV level at the Grid Sub Stations of Kashmir and Jammu. However all grid sub stations have been excluded from this scheme. Accordingly, an investment of Rs. 50.42 crores is proposed for power factor improvement at 33 KV and 11 KV level. Meanwhile to enhance the power factor and voltage at the consumer end, it is proposed to install LT shunt capacitors at major distribution transformers in the state, however the year-wise requirement of LT shunt capacitors is estimated to be about 41,000 kilovolt-amperes reactive. The projected total Business Plan for power factor improvement by way of installation of LT shunt capacitors is Rs. 3.02 crores. Meanwhile the central government is all set to introduce Restructured Accelerated Power Development Programme (R-APDRP) scheme to bring down the T&D losses in J&K. "The Central government has sanctioned Rs 151.99 Crores for the first phase of the project under RAPDRP. Rs 1665.27 crores for the second phase of the vital project have also been approved. The second phase includes the two main cities Jammu and Srinagar cities for which the funds estimated at the cost of Rs 52.89 crores have been approved," read the document. |
