Flower Mandi in Jammu still a distant dream
Seven years on, department fails to identify land

Jammu, Aug17: The tall claims of coalition government headed by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah are ostensibly restricted to speeches only as after the lapse of nearly seven years since the announcement made by government for establishment of flower mandi in Jammu district, same has failed to see the daylight as department has failed to identify land till today.
Sources informed Early Times that following the announcement in the year 2007 during the tenure of PDP-Congress government, the Floriculture department had initiated the process and had also constructed flower mandi in Green Belt Park but in the meantime the High Court Jammu had stayed the construction and also ordered for dismantling the same.
Since dismantling of half constructed structure in Green Belt Park, the department was reportedly asked to identity land at some other place but after the lapse of more than five years, the land has not been identified by the department, sources said.
An official of Floriculture department wishing not to be named said that the best suitable location for establishment of flower Mandi in Jammu district was either in Gandhi Nagar area or in old Jammu city which could be easily approachable to all the farmers but land could not be identified. A flower cultivator, Rajinder Kumar of R S Pura informed Early Times, "For last many years, I have been cultivating different varieties of flowers on suggestions of Floriculture deptt, which had asked the farmers to promote cash crops and assured for best possible marketing facilities. But unfortunately, we are still dependent on temples for selling our produce". He further said that when the announcement regarding establishment of Flower Mandi was made by government, it had given a ray of hope to flower growers but the announcement was merely an announcement.
Another farmer Ram Chand said that the department had assured all marketing facilities and also assured for purchasing of cold store vans, which would collect flowers from the growers of adjoining areas of Jammu district but all in vain.
"Instead of purchasing of three Cold Store vans , department has failed to provide even basic marketing facilities while the cold store vans are reportedly gathering dust in the Green Belt Park, Gandhi Nagar for the last many years", said an official.
Director of Floriculture department K K Sharma said, "We are locating a suitable place for establishment of Mandi for the last many years but failed to achieve success.
There is acute paucity of land in city and even our own office is also running in a rented accommodation".
He further said that they have decided to depute one van to Kathua-Samba area, another to Kisthwar- Doda area and third to some far-flung areas for providing transport facilities to flower growers of state.
