Row over cabinet meet turns murky | Soz has worked out secret deal with PDP: NC | | Fazal Khan
Srinagar, Aug 17: A day after Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee chief Professor Saif-ud-Din Soz asked the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to convene the cabinet meeting to discuss various issues, National Conference today remained non-committal whether the cabinet meet would be called or not. A top National Conference leader while talking to Early Times said, "Soz is giving such statements to appease the People’s Democratic Party. He has worked out a secret deal with the PDP and wants the coalition to break as early as possible." Pertinently, the JKPCC Chief Prof Soz on Saturday had asked the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to call the cabinet meeting soon so that issues pertaining to the reservations of Paharis, OBCs and refugees from West Pakistan are discussed in detail. The NC leader said that Chief Minister during his Independence Day speech announced the reservation for Paharis and OBCs and I think there is nothing wrong in it. "Omar is the Chief Minister and he has got full authority to take any decision. It is not necessary for him to discuss each and every issue with his subordinates. Soz by giving irresponsible statements is undermining the authority of the Chief Minister's institution," he said. Asked why no cabinet meeting has been called since July 16 he said, "It is Chief Minister's discretion to call the cabinet meeting or not. No one can dictate terms to him." Ties between the National Conference and Congress hit the new low earlier this month when the JKPCC Chief Prof Soz blamed NC for the defeat of the Congress candidates in the recently held parliamentary polls. Following Soz's assertion, the NC leaders skipped the meeting of the Coordination Committee, headed by Soz. NC leaders staying away from the meet prompted Congress leaders to ask the Congress high command to take the final call over the coalition's fate. However, High Command prevailed and directed Congress leaders to let the Omar led government function till it completes its tenure, slated to end this year. A few days after the row over CCC meet ended Prof Soz triggered another controversy by asking Omar to convene the cabinet meet. The General Secretary of National Conference Ali Muhammad Sagar while commenting over the fissures within coalition said, "If Allah is willing coalition will complete its full term. There are only a few months left for the coalition to complete its term." Sagar refused to comment over Soz's statement on cabinet meet. "You better ask Soz sahib why he wants cabinet to meet," he added. Meanwhile, senior NC leader Dr Sheikh Mustafa Kamal ridiculed the statement of the JKPCC Chief Prof Soz about Paharis and OBCs. "Congress slept over the issue for more than five years. They have woken up after Omar announced the reservation for them," he said. Reacting to the corruption charges leveled by Soz against the NC ministers, Kamal said, "When Soz accuses us of corruption, he must understand that the vital port folios were in possession of his ministers. He cannot blame us." |
