Budgam people up in arms over damage caused to agri land by brick kilns | | | Early Times Report
BUDGAM, Aug 17: The people of Budgam district rue the government and the authorities for allowing the destruction of agricultural land at the hands of the alleged brick kiln mafia . All this is happening in violation of the environmental laws and under the nose of the authorities who have given a free hand to the people to carry on their business. The damage done to the agricultural land is insurmountable as there are scenes of destruction all around. The district presents a look of war-torn area as there is only the brick dust instead of the paddy crop and the soothening orchards have been shorn of the fruit giving trees, depicting that there isn't good in store for the generations to follow. "The ill concern of the government and of the concerned authorities has made us feel that we the people from the district are not worth humans. It appears that the Budgam district has been reserved for brick kilns because from here the bricks are supplied to the all parts of the valley," say the people who live around the brick kilns. The ill effects of these brick kilns are many but the problem of air pollution as a result of the mushrooming of the brick kilns is the cause of concern for the people. There are hundreds of brick kilns operational in the district, which produce toxic gases throughout the year, hence making the lives of the people hellish. These brick kilns are spread over the thousands of kanals of the land. "For facilitating brick kilns in the district, thousands of fruit giving trees were felled down in the brazen violation of the environmental norms. It has done a huge damage to the water resources of the area which have dried up as a result of the mushrooming of the brick kilns in the area," said Abdul Jabbar of Budgam while talking to the Early Times. As per Jabbar, the brick kilns have invited a huge rush of the tippers, the movement of which has caused a sense of fear among the residents of district, particularly in the ones living near or along the roads leading to the brick kilns. The movement of the tippers, says Jabbar, continues from dawn to dusk and even during the night hence putting in danger the movement of the people. Some parents of the school going children said that they remain scared about their children till they don't return homes because the tipper movement in the area poses a potential threat to their lives. These parents allege that the government and the authorities are hand in glove with the brick kiln mafia, who has taken a heavy toll on the physical and the mental health of the inhabitants of the area. |
