Early Times Report

Jammu, Aug 17:Expressing his concern over damages to the crops and houses of people in border villages of Samba and Kathua besides to the properties of those residing in remote villages of Rajouri, Poonch, Reasi and parts of Udhampur, People's Democratic Party (PDP) leader and Chief Election Coordinator for Jammu Province Abdul Hamid Choudhary today asked coalition government to evaluate losses and compensate affected families immediately.
According to press release, Choudhary Hamid said damages have been done in villages located on either sides of river Basantar in Samba and government must rush its revenue teams to these places immediately to assess losses. At some places the temporary bunds erected by Irrigation and Flood Control Department have also been reported to have washed away causing damages to public property, he observed and sought compensation for affected families. Soil erosion and overflowing bunds have flooded people's houses on either side of river Basantar in Samba, river Ujh in Kathua and several localities in Jammu have also suffered damages with rain water gushing into their houses. Reports of a couple of persons getting killed in the debris of their collapsed houses in Sunderbani are also shocking and bereaved families must immediately be extended all possible help.
The government, Choudhary Hamid said must be sensitive enough to the needs of people and not delay compensations as well as assessment plans of damaged crops. Excessive rains also causes havoc in many low lying areas in Jammu but never ever has government cared to set the drainage system right in these localities so that this problem in done away once or all. There are no contingency plans with government to deal with such eventualities, he added.
He asked flood and irrigation people besides agricultural authorities to also protect people's fields in villages and help them save their crops in whatever manner the experts can. Meantime, the PDP leader urged people to not to venture in flooded area and stay safe. He also asked government to put warning sign boards at ever vulnerable places and possibly deploy guards to prevent people from venturing into such dangerous areas.
