Indian medical scientists need to find antidote for Ebola | | | Ebola has posed a major threat to people across the world. It is more dreadful that terrorist holding machine guns and mortars. It is so because scientists have not been able to find treatment for Ebola. This very dreaded disease has gripped many nations by panic.Panic and fear are the outcome of reports indicating that more than one million people have been affected by the current Ebola outbreak in West Africa. The WHO has warned that there is "no early end in sight" to the severe health crisis and called for "extraordinary measures" to stop the transmission of the disease.According to the latest update issued by the World Health Organisation (WHO), 128 new cases of Ebola virus disease, as well as 56 deaths, were reported from Guinea, Liberia, Nigeria, and Sierra Leone between August 10 and 11, bringing the total number of cases to 1,975 and deaths to 1,069.The WHO Director-General has said more than one million people are affected by the disease and these people need daily material support, including food. The infected people are in the "hot zone of disease transmission" on the borders of the three countries most impacted by the disease. There is no early end to the outbreak in sight. This is an extraordinary outbreak that requires extraordinary measures for containment. This is a severe health crisis, and it can rapidly become a humanitarian crisis if developed nations do not join hands for stopping transmission of the virus. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon chaired a UN system-wide coordination on Ebola and stressed the need for the entire UN system to support the WHO's efforts in combating the outbreak. Reports say that the outbreak has placed every city with an international airport at risk of an imported case.Decisions to seal off the hot zone of disease transmission, that is, the area where the borders of Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone intersect, are critical for stopping the reinfection of areas via the cross-border movement of people. In fact tackling the virus disease has to be a twin-edged programme. One,authorities all over the world have to initiate measures for preventing spread of the virus. This can be done by preventing even a single soul, living in the countries affected by the virus, from travelling to other countries. On each airport and even Railway stations arrangements be made for checking each passenger for the virus.Secondly, the WHO should set up a committee of top scientists from various developed nations to find out ways and means for curing the virus. Though reports indicate that not a single case of Ebola has been detected in India so far there is utmost need for the central and all state Governments to pool their resources for developing the infrastructure for tackling patients affected by Ebola virus.Even Indian scientists and medical researchers, who have earned name for their research work, need to concentrate on finding out ways and means for tackling the menace of this dreaded virus. The central and the state Governments need to earmark sufficient funds to those research centres where the scientists pledge to find a vaccine or some medicine for treatment of this dreaded virus. In addition to this state and the central agencies need to pool their resources and efforts for bringing about awareness among people with regard to causes that result in the spread of Ebola and enlighten them on the ways and means for preventive measures. It is a known thing that prevention is better than cure and when there is no cure for Ebola virus it is better to bank on preventive measures. Judged by the condition of people in the Indian villages where basic civic facilities are missing outbreak of Ebola virus can be as disastrous as detonating a nuclear bomb. |
