Srinagar, Aug 17: Police Sunday claimed to have busted a gang of extortionists here in north Kashmir's Bandipora township after they arrested four persons. Police said that they were receiving complaints about masked extortionists who were harassing locals and pedestrians by brandishing knives to grab money from them in Watapora, Leharwalpora, Kulhama and Lankrishipora areas of the district. This is the second gang busted by police during last two months. Earlier they arrested a gangster with a toy pistol in Pulwama district. Laater his other associates were arrested from Tral who were demanding ransom from elected Panches and sarpanches in the district. Deputy Superintendent of Police, Raja Zuhaib, said that police station Bandipora received a complaint from a villager of Watapora who narrated how he was forced to hand over all his valuables and money after four masked youth put a knife on his neck. Following the inputs, police detained many suspects for questioning. During questioning, the police zeroed in on four persons who they believed were involved in the extortion. "Four men - identified as Manzoor Ahmed Bhat, Mushtaq Ahmed Malla, Nasir Maqbool alias Prince and Mehrajudin Kawa - all residents of Watapora were arrested under section 392 RPC," police said. Fifth accused, identified as Nasir Ahmed Sheikh, is absconding. |
