Pak faces diplomatic isolation
10/15/2014 10:46:41 PM
After the US, the UK and other devel
oped nations refused to be influenced
by the Pakistan's latest efforts for raking up the Kashmir issue on the international level, Islamabad has once again faced an embarrassing situation when its bid to seek UN intervention on the Kashmir issue did not evoke any response from the UN Chief, Ban-ki-Mooon.Even after having resorted to repeated ceasefire violations on the LoC and the IB in Jammu and Kashmir Islamabad made a brazen attempt at blaming India for ceasefire violations when New Delhi had made it known that it would retaliate whenever and wherever Pakistani troops opened gun or mortar fire on the Indian border outposts and pickets. When Pakistan sent a letter to the UN Chief, Ban-Ki-Moon,pleading for UN intervention for resolving the Kashmir issue there was not even an iota of any commitment by the UN Chief for mediating between India and Pakistan on the Kashmir issue. This way Islamabad's bid to seek UN intervention on the Kashmir issue has failed to draw any new response from the world body which reiterated that India and Pakistan need to resolve all differences through dialogue to find a long-term solution to the dispute. Sartaj Aziz, adviser to Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on national security and foreign affairs, had written to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon on the recent border tension with India and sought the UN';s intervention which actually was his attempt to internationalise the Kashmir issue. In the letter to Ban, Aziz said Pakistan believes the UN has an important role to play in promoting the objective of peaceful resolution of the Kashmir issue, including through his "good offices".
When Ban's deputy spokesperson Farhan Haq, was asked to comment on the letter seeking Ban's intervention and his viewpoint on the issue, ha stated he would refer to a statement that was issued last week by Ban's spokesperson in which the UN chief encouraged India and Pakistan to resolve all differences through dialogue and engage constructively to find a long-term solution for peace and stability in Kashmir.
Though the Secretary-General is "concerned about the recent escalation of violence along the Line of Control between India and Pakistan he is silent on the UN intervention. He is even opposed to any third party mediation despite the fact that he has deplored the loss of lives and the displacement of civilians on both sides. This way Pakistan is gradually getting isolated. It was so because all the developed nations know it fully well that Pakistan has turned into a safe haven for terrorists of many hues and the soil of Pakistan was being used for exporting terror to India and to other nations. In case Pakistan wants to come out of its isolation it needs to mend fences with India and that can be done by ending its relish for ceasefire violations
The recent events on the LOC and the IB have fully demonstrated that Pakistan does not have the strength and stamina for engaging India even in a breezy border conflict. And when the Pakistani troops faced a volley of gun and mortar fire from the Indian troops the former calmed down and simply kept the border conflict alive by firing on some Indian border outposts and civilian villages. Within a week or so Pakistan has lost the force and fury when scores of its border outposts and pickets were destroyed in the Indian retaliatory fire. Knowing well that the implementation of the UN resolution on Kashmir, providing for holding a plebiscite in Jammu and Kashmir, cannot be implemented when India has made it clear that Kashmir is non-negotiable. India has, over the years, treated Jammu and Kashmir state as an integral part. Hence pleading for a third-party mediation, seeking UN intervention or third-country mediation are meant to keep the Kashmir issue alive. If Islamabad makes raking up Kashmir issue part of its policy and ideology there can never be any meeting ground between the two neighbouring countries. For the last over five years Islamabad has been making repeated pleas for holding bilateral talks and New Delhi, despite certain provocations from Islamabad, kept the channels of dialogue open. But when Islamabad and its agencies kept on needling New Delhi, kept on assisting militants in crossing over to Jammu and Kashmir for escalating the level of violence and patronizing Kashmiri separatists the BJP led NDA Government had no other alternative but to choke the channels of dialogue.
