SRINAGAR, Oct 15: Despite putting all the efforts and using political influence the incumbent in-charge Vice-Chancellor of University of Kashmir, Professor Ali Mohammad Shah is on his way out as his name did not figure in the short listed candidates for the position of Vice-Chancellor.
Sources told Early Times that the search committee formed to find out the new Vice-Chancellor of University of Kashmir has zeroed on three names and Prof A M Shah does not figure in the list of shortlisted candidates. The shortlisted candidates have been put through the interview and the final call in this regard is likely to be made very soon.
"The three short listed candidates were called for the interaction on three separate dates. Prof S W A Naqvi, Director National Institute of Oceanography (NIO), Goa, was called for interaction with Chancellor, Governor Narendra Nath Vohra and Pro-Chancellor, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah at Raj Bhawan here on September 5," said sources.
Sources said that Prof. Javed Musarrat, Department of Agricultural Microbiology, Aligarh Muslim University was also called for interaction on September 5. The third short listed candidate namely Prof Khurshid Iqbal Andrabi, Dean Research, University of Kashmir was called for interaction on September 18.
"Both Chancellor and Pro-Chancellor had detailed interaction with three short listed candidates. The upcoming challenges of University of Kashmir came up for discussion. The purpose of holding interaction with the short listed candidates was to ascertain who among them is best suited for the position of Vice-Chancellor," said sources.
Sources said that Prof. Naqvi is the favourite candidate for the position of Vice-Chancellor given his administrative experiences and good track record. Uttar Pradesh-born Naqvi was most likely to become the next VC of KU, because of his strong publications as well. It is expected that Raj Bhawan will issue the order for the appointment of new Vice-Chancellor within three days, as it is without VC for the past five months.
The panel of three short listed candidates was submitted to the Governor by the chairman of the selection committee Goverdhan Mehta, Former Director, Indian Institute of Sciences. Prof Andrabi, who is presently Dean Research, University of Kashmir has no chances for the VC ship because of his weak administrative experience as Dean Research.
It would be in place to mention here that three weeks back a section of teachers met Chancellor and pleaded that Prof Shah should be appointed as VC. The Chancellor told them if Prof Shah is there in the panel of three recommended names, he will be given preference. However, to their utter surprise this section of teachers came to know that the acting Vice-Chancellor has not been short listed. Prof Shah who is a close relative of Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) President, Prof Saif-ud-din Soz tried his best to sneak in but failed to do so. His credentials fell short and they could not fit the bill of the person who is going to head the University of Kashmir.
