Mubarak Gul offers Rs 5000 to flood victims | Adding Insult to Injury! | | Locals stage protest, seize his vehicle
Early Times Report
Srinagar, Oct 15: Senior National Conference leader and MLA Eidgah, Mubarak Gul faced embarrassment in old city today when locals seized his vehicle and refused to take relief cheques offered by him. Sources told Early Times that local MLA and Speaker of the Legislative Assembly Mubarak Gul arrived at Pamposh colony Eidgah this morning and offered Rs 5000 cheques to the flood victims. "The amount offered by the local MLA infuriated the flood affected people who have suffered huge losses in the recent floods," they said. Sources said that as the word about the MLA offering Rs 5000 spread in the area, locals came out on the streets and staged a protest. "They even seized his vehicle," said a source. He said infuriated residents described meager amount being offered by the MLA as "Government adding insult to their injuries," the source added. As the MLA sensed trouble, he left the area in a jiffy without handing over any cheques to the victims. Later the residents of Pamposh Colony arrived at Press Enclave here and staged a protest against the NC-Cong regime and the local MLA for what they termed as "showing indifferent attitude" towards their miseries. The protestors alleged that MLA Idgah tried to silence a few of his workers by providing cheques of Rs 5,000 each. "Our houses were damaged in floods and we suffered heavy losses. For the first time after floods Mubarak Gul visited the area. Instead of consoling us, he added fuel to the fire. The MLA should understand that we cannot even buy material for a single window from such meager amount," one of the protestors said. The protestors said that they had no option but to seize the vehicle of the concerned MLA when he visited the area. "We were not ready to release his vehicle, but it was only after the police officials assured us of speedy relief, we released his vehicle," another protestor said adding that so far they have not received a single penny from the government. They alleged that a team comprising of Revenue officials who visited the area a week ago ignored the sufferers and registered the names of affluent ones. |
