Govt should postpone elections, concentrate on rehabilitation of flood victims: JKPRP | | | Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, Oct 15: The newly framed Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Republican Party (JKPRP) which elected a veteran working class leader advocate Ghulam Nabi Tranboo as its first president during its one day convention at Srinagar on Tuesday, today made an appeal to Election Commission of India (ECI) to postpone the Assembly elections by four -five months as the situation was not conducive for the same in view of the devastation created in many parts of the State in general and Kashmir Valley in particular due to last month's flash floods. The Party while reiterating its demand regarding postponement of elections said that the people are yet under the trauma as they have faced a lot of devastation in floods and under such circumstances it will not be feasible for the candidates to visit the most affected areas for campaigning as such an action will infuriate the voters. The Party said that it was high time for both Central and State Governments to concentrate on rehabilitation of flood hit people by providing them relief and compensation for the losses suffered by them. The meeting said, besides political parties should also join the relief and rehabilitation programme to win the hearts of the masses who have faced a lot of devastation due to floods. ``Our priority at this juncture should be rehabilitation of masses, providing support to them in restoration of the business establishments of traders and also compensate the farmers and orchardists who suffered heavy losses in floods instead of concentrating on holding of elections'', the Party opined. It said the havens will not break if the elections are postponed by three -four months till the flood ravaged people will get some relief and come out of the shock. By announcing Assembly elections means adding acid to injury and this will give a wrong signal among the affected people, the meeting added. The meeting which was also addressed by veteran Trade -Unionist and the Executive Member of the Party, Mir Ghulam Rasool Butwani said that people of State have full faith and belief in the democratic process but at the same time it is to be ensured that their sentiments are not hurt by taking a decision in hurry as the people have not yet come out of the shock. He said the first and foremost thing which should be done at this juncture is to win the confidence of the shell shocked people who have suffered a lot of devastation in floods. This will go a long way in strengthening the democratic process in the State and in restoration of peoples confidence in democratic institutions, he added. Mir said to put the State back on rails which ahs also suffered a lot of devastation due to 25 year long turmoil which is the result of the wrong policies of the successive Congress and NC governments in State and at the Centre, the need of the hour is to restore the peoples confidence in the democratic institutions by licking their scars and wiping their tears. He said the JKPRP which is wedded to the secular and socialistic principles will leave no stone unturned in strengthening the democratic institutions in the State, restore peoples confidence on the same and strengthen the intercommunity bonds and restoration of total peace in Kashmir Valley where the people of all communities can live together like brothers. |
