Politicians rake up issues that may lead to regional polarisation in J&K
11/18/2014 11:14:17 PM
The debate over Article 370,that grants special status to Jammu and Kashmir, and over the need for retaining AFSPA in the state has assumed new dimensions in the poll bound state. In fact soon after the Election Commission announced the schedule for a five-phase Assembly election in Jammu and Kashmir leaders belonging to various parties started airing their views on AFSPA, Article 370 and on need for resolving the Kashmir issue through the process of dialogue. As far as all the three issues are concerned they have also assumed regional dimensions. While most of the Kashmir centric politicians and majority of people in the Valley support revocation of AFSPA,retention of Article 370 and the need for resolving the Kashmir issue, those whose roots are in the regions of Jammu and Ladakh wish to see early revocation of Article 370.They want the AFSPA to last till militancy ended in the state. They also oppose raking up the Kashmir issue on the plea that the very instrument of accession of the state with India had result in final settlement of the Kashmir issue. As far as the AFSPA issue is concerned political leaders have started blaming one another for sabotaging the move for revoking the so called draconian law. Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah, has found it convenient to hold PDP patron Mufti Mohd. Sayeed responsible for not assisting him (Omar) while the Chief Minister was pleading with the Congress led UPA Government for the revocation of the AFSPA.It is a case of dichotomy.
If Omar Abdullah was quite eager and keen to see the AFSPA withdrawn why did he not resign when he had found the Congress led UPA Government not listening to his repeated pleas ?It means that his love for power had not given him the nerves to stand up in front of the Congress.
Again a case of Dichotomy. If the PCC chief, Saif-ud-Din Soz,has now raked up the issue of revocation of AFSPA where was he during the last six years when his party was sharing power with the NC in Jammu and Kashmir ? Yes he had suggested to Omar Abdullah in 2013 that he should convene a meeting to discuss the need for revocation of the AFSPA. And Soz has tried to voice his favour for revocation of AFSPA at an opportune time when his party is faced with the ire of voters. He seems to have ignored one important factor. The Congress has sronger base in the region of Jammu than in Kashmir and demand for scrapping AFSPA could prove counter productive in Jammu region in the ongoing election period. Two days after former Union Home Minister P Chidambaram termed the Armed Forces Special Powers Act as an "obnoxious law", senior Congress leader Saif -ud -Din Soz today said the law needs to be revoked from Jammu and Kashmir after consultation with the Army Generals. He has said that the state does not need AFSPA anymore. The Government should withdraw it after taking the top Army functionaries on board. Well Soz had a dig at Omar Abdullah who has blamed the Congress for not supporting the Chief Minister's move to withdraw the AFSPA.Soz has said that since Chief Minister had not sought any opinion from the Army Generals how could he have withdrawn the Act as Chairman of the Unified command ? There was a time when the NC president, Farooq Abdullah, did not want to reopen channels of dialogue with Pakistan because Pakistan continued to export terror to Jammu and Kashmir. And now right from London he has favoured resolution of the Kashmir issue through talks with Pakistan. It is all part of electoral politics. Such political tricks remain in fashion during election period not only in Jammu and Kashmir but in rest of the country. That is why political pundits say that everything is fair not only in love and war but also in process of election.
