Why is emphatic BJP nervous in announcing candidate for Nagrota? | | | Kunal Shrivatsa Early Times Report JAMMU, Nov 18: Even though BJP is claiming to achieve its hyped "Mission 44+" in the upcoming Assembly polls and is continuously asserting that for the first time in J&K's electoral history it is in the reckoning to attain power in the state, the saffron party's lack of confidence in declaring candidate from Nagrota Assembly segment is indicative of its nervousness deep down. According to political analysts if the BJP is so much assured of getting absolute majority on its own in the forthcoming Assembly elections then why it is yet to announce a candidate from Nagrota constituency which is one of the prestigious assembly segments in Jammu district and where the saffron party has a strong footing. "The inordinate delay in finalizing a candidate for Nagrota Assembly Constituency doesn't augur well with the BJP's Mission 44+ plan as the segment was being represented twice by none other than the State BJP president and Lok Sabha member Jugal Kishore Sharma since 2002," said political analysts. "By not announcing party nominee for the segment which is bordering Jammu city and is one of the strong holds of the BJP is certainly emanating wrong signals in the poll bound state particularly in Jammu region where the party is maintaining that it holds an edge over its rivals," they added. The political experts opine that the holdup in declaring candidate for Nagrota Assembly Constituency reflects that process of selecting and finalizing candidates is marred with inner- party conflicts and contradictions where it is hard for the party leadership to give green signal to a certain name. "The supporters of BJP in Nagrota constituency are eagerly awaiting the announcement of the candidature but it is taking more time than expected probably due to lack of consensus among the party leadership over the prospective candidate," said political experts. If sources within BJP are to be believed then the impediment in announcing the name lies in the fact that the Nagrota seat has as many as three strong contenders due to which the party is unable to zero-in on a particular candidate. "At least two-three names are doing the rounds as BJP candidate for Nagrota Assembly segment including Chander Mohan Sharma, Nand Kishore Sharma-younger brother of MP Jugal Kishore-and new entrant Ajatshatru Singh, who quit National Conference to join BJP… The finalization of BJP candidate for Nagrota has further got tangled due to the sudden emergence of Ajatsahtru Singh in saffron party," said sources. "BJP is in a fix on whom to give the mandate from Nagrota…It is unbelievable that the party has okayed all the names in Jammu region except for Nagrota for which it is still indecisive even though it won the seat twice in 2002 and 2008….while the problem is getting more and more complex, the top brass of the party is trying to find out a viable solution to address it," they added. |
