Riding on peoples' anger against NC, PDP all set to open account from Srinagar in Assembly elections | Uphill task for NC to retain eight seats | | Jehangir Rashid Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Nov 18: The summer capital of the state has always remained an alien territory for People’s Democratic Party (PDP) as none of the party leaders could make it to the legislature from the eight seats of the district as and when elections for Assembly were held. However, this time around the situation may change since the PDP candidates have got great chances of winning some assembly seats of Srinagar. If things go as per predictions then the PDP would be able to open its account from Srinagar. This would be no less than a shock for the National Conference since the party has been claiming that Srinagar is and would always be a 'safe haven' for the party. The public mood is quite against the NC candidates in most of the constituencies of Kashmir and same holds true with the people of eight constituencies of Srinagar. People as a whole blame the NC for its faulty performance during the past and more so after the 2008 assembly elections. "National Conference has always claimed that they stand for the development of Srinagar, but the ground situation is very different. Despite getting elected time and again the NC legislators have ditched the people of city. There is no development and it would be better to say that there is under development," said Javed Ahmad, a resident of Khanyar. Javed says that the sitting legislator from Khanyar assembly segment Ali Mohammad Sagar was found missing in the aftermath of recent flood and this did not go well with the people of Srinagar. He said that Sagar considered to be NC's face in Srinagar failed to deliver goods and as such faced peoples wrath time and again. "There is anger among the people of Srinagar after the recent flood and the NC legislators vanished from the scene like thin air. As the elections are being held immediately after flood it is quite obvious that the anger has not faded away. The anger would be the driving force this time around and it would cost NC dearly," said Imtiyaz Ahmad, a resident of Eidgah. Sajad Ahmad, a resident of Lal Mandi said that NC's sitting legislator from Amira Kadal, Nasir Aslam Wani did nothing to mitigate sufferings of flood affected people. He said the anger of the people is all set to dent the chances of Nasir who is the NC candidate for the coming Assembly elections. "PDP's candidate for Amira Kadal, Syed Altaf Bukhari threw open the doors of his office and residence at Sheikh Bagh after the devastating flood. More than 1,000 people were accommodated and these people were all praise for Bukhari. This maybe a political stunt but Bukhari has been able to come to rescue of people and it is going to help in coming elections," said Sajad. Given the failure of state Government to come to rescue of flood affected people of Kashmir more so Srinagar district, it is quite obvious that it would require a herculean task for NC to retain all the seats in the summer capital. The things would become clear on December 14 when the elections for assembly seats of Srinagar would be held. |
