GMC Hospital ill prepared to fight fire | Most wards san fire extinguishers | | Nitesh Sangral
Early Times Report
Jammu, Nov 18: The recent fire at Super Specialty (SS) Hospital has exposed the lack of fire-fighting facilities in most of government hospitals in Jammu province. Even the prestigious Government Medical College and Hospital is no exception, which is reportedly ill prepared for any untoward incident. Sources in the GMC&H informed Early Times that the hospital was short of modern fire-fighting system, equipments such as fire-alarms, fire extinguisher and smoke detectors. The absence of such paraphernalia in hospital signaling towards a fact that hospital authorities have not learnt any lesson from devastating fireincident in SS hospital on November 9. When this correspondent visited the GMC hospital, only a few fire extinguishers were found. Most of the wards are without the facility. Sources in GMC revealed that the ceiling of the building was made up of ply-board which was more prone to fire and even a spark of electricity could reduce the emergency ward into ashes. “Though GMC has complete fire fighting system but it is lying defunct for the last many months for want of trained persons,” sources said and adding that even if the system would be restored there was no expert who could keep a tab on the entire system. Superintendent Dr. Ravinder Rattan Pal said that the hydrant system was functional but he didn’t have any more details of other paraphernalia available in the hospital. |
