Four candidates with criminal background to contest in first phase

Jammu, Nov 18: Five candidates with criminal records are contesting in the first phase to be held on November 25 in Jammu and Kashmir. 123 candidates are in fray for 15 assembly seats in first phase.
Addressing the media persons, state co-ordinator of Jammu and Kashmir Election Watch Balvinder Singh said that that the voter has the elementary right to know full particulars of a candidate who is to represent him in the Parliamentary system of democracy and their organizations have brought this report which would be helpful to the voters to check the credentials of the candidates.
According to an analysis by Jammu and Kashmir Election Watch (JKEW) and Association For Democratic Reforms (ADR), out of 123 candidates contesting in first phase Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections for 87 seats, 5 candidates have declared criminal offences against them awhile 46 are crorepati candidates. The average assets of each candidate are Rs 1.38 crore. On analyzing the affidavits, JKEW and ADR affidavits found that 1 out of 15 Indian National Congress (INC) candidates, (7%) have criminal cases against them while 1 out of 14 of the PDP candidates, (7%). As 1 out of 2 Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) candidates, Aijaz Hussain (50%) and 2 out of 39 Independents candidates, Nazir Ahmad Wani and Mohammad Yousaf (5 %) have declared serious criminal charges against them.
Out of the 123 candidates analysed, 46 (37%) are crorepatis. Party-wise, 9 out of 13 Jammu Kashmir National Conference candidates 69%) and 7 out of 14 JKPDP candidates (50%) are crorepatis. 6 out of 13 BJP candidates (46%) are crorepatis. 5 out of 15 INC candidates (33%) and 13 out of 39 independents candities (33%) have declared assets of more than Rs 1 crore.
A total of 3 candidates have declared assets less than Rs. 50 thousand. Out of these 123 candidates, 2 have declared liabilities of Rs. 1 crore and above. 18 candidates with total assets worth more than Rs. 1 crore have declared no PAN details. Candidates while, 4 candidates have declared total annual income of more than Rs. 15 lakhs crore.
