Early Times Report

BANDIPORA, Feb 16: One of the basic infrastructure requirements for leading a normal life and enjoying the benefits of development is electricity along with good road connectivity which is missing in various rural areas here in Bandipora district of north Kashmir. The situation in remote villages of Bandipora town is no different. Many remote villages, including Arhgam, Papchan, Safapora, Soudnara, Saderkoot, Nadihal, Banniyari, Mukdamyour and other adjoining areas are facing acute shortage of power. The consumers said the power supply was erratic for the past one week and voltage was low.
Local residents of Banniyari Bashir Ahmad told early times that, "the power supply lines tied to poles and trees were lying naked and posing a serious danger to humans and livestock. "The electricity is disrupted for hours despite of paying a monthly power tariff of Rs 320-330.
Many far flung areas of Bandipora district is not even connected to the national power grid even though the 330 megawatt Kishanganga power projected is being constructed there, Bashir said.
Another local resident Fayaz Ahmad said that, "the voltage is so low that it fails to illuminate even a small room. We are having no choice but to take dinner in candlelight.
Fayaz says, matter of the fact is that in most of the far flung villages of Bandipora district, the electric wires have been made to pass through trees and tied with residential houses. The wires are decayed and cannot withstand even a few inches of snowfall. "We fail to understand that why PDD had not enlisted these far flung areas for the repair as in most villages no repairs have been done since the electrification scheme was launched decades before in Jammu and Kashmir, Fayaz said.
A group of students complained that power is playing hide and seek and during night hours, the supply goes off for hours. They said they cannot study till late hours as University and Board exams are very near and unscheduled curtailment have frustrated them. Meanwhile, PDD official from Bandipora district wishing not to be named told early times that, Due to the lack of installation infrastructure, there is a need to connect these above mentioned villages with the Kishan Ganga Power project for avoiding any failure and power interruptions in near future. We are starting the repair work in some areas in near future. He, however, denied that there was any portable wire lying naked and posing a serious danger to humans and livestock, said official.
