Around 240 Ramban schools without potable water | Govt schools lack basic facilities in JK | | Bijay Charak

Jammu, Feb 16: Notwithstanding the tall claims of state government to provide all basic facilities to government primary schools, around 240 schools in Ramban district are without potable water. Sources informed Early Times that the total 522 government primary schools running in district Ramban out of which 240 government primary schools for away from potable water facilities. "Many government schools have provided water tanks but in view of the shortage of drinking water supply facility, students have been found taking water from natural sources", sources said. "One such school is Primary School, Gardholla of Botate block of district Ramban, where department has provided a plastic tank but there is no water supply to the school. To quench their thirst, students fetch water from more than 100 meters", sources said. Mohmmad Rayez resident of village Kabbi said that providing a water tank in school has not served any purpose as still the students had to fetch water from nearby "Bowli" (spring). He further said that Gardholla Primary school is not an isolated case but there are around 40 primary schools in block Batote out of total 76 Government primary schools, which are still without potable water facility. According to information furnished by the concerned department, more than 90 government primary schools are running from a single room accommodation and 239 are still running from rented buildings in Ramban district. The schools which are running from single rooms and from rented buildings also have no separate kitchen - cum- store facility. An official said that government schools were totally neglected by state government, due to which the enrollment in such schools has been witnessing a downward trend and private schools were flourishing. "The education must be first priority of government so that we are able to make our country and future bright", he said. When contacted, Chief Education Officer Mohammad Ashraf said that 172 government primary schools have no facilities of drinking water in which most of the schools department provided water tanks but there were no pipelines, which could provide water. "We have made a proposal and forwarded the same to Public Health Engineering department to provide water pipelines to these schools so that the problem of water scarcity ends", he said. |
