Western disturbance leads to normalization of weather conditions in Kashmir | Plains receive rain, higher reaches experience snowfall | | Jehangir Rashid
Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Feb 16: Kashmir valley that has been witnessing abnormal day temperature over the past few days returned to almost normal weather conditions as rains lashed the plains while as the higher reaches and some areas in countryside experiencing fresh bout of snowfall. Over the past few days the day temperature in the Kashmir valley was much above the normal level. The day temperature hovered 7-8 degrees Celsius above the normal level in the last week or so. However, the day temperature today was below normal with the mercury settling at 6.9 degrees Celsius, 2.1 degrees below the normal temperature. The rains that lashed the summer capital of the state and other plains coupled with snow in higher reaches and countryside was due to the Western Disturbance that is likely to affect the weather system over the next eight days. During these days it is expected that plains would receive rains while as the higher reaches would experience snowfall. Meteorological (MeT) Department, Director, Sonam Lotus said that Western Disturbance that is persisting over Jammu & Kashmir is likely to affect the state from February 16 to February 24 with occasional gaps. Sonam Lotus said that people would have breather in between the spells of rainfall. "Under the influence of this weather system, moderate rain/thundershowers (hailstorm in plains of Jammu division) and snowfall over higher reaches will occur at most places of Kashmir and Jammu divisions and at many places of Ladakh region. Some places may receive heavy rain/ snow during this period. These weather conditions may trigger landslide and avalanche in vulnerable areas of the state," said Director MeT. Sonam Lotus said that the weather system may disrupt surface and air transport during these days adding that people should take necessary precautions. He said during February 16-24 there will be significant decrease in day temperature and slight rise in night temperature. He said people should not be worried since the rains would not be heavy as was the case during September 2014 which led to devastating flood at that point of them. Since last night the summer capital of the state experienced rains and same continued during the day today. The city recorded more than 20 millimeters of rains during the past 24 hours with the day temperature dipping below the normal level. The MeT department has forecast that in the next 24 hours there are chances of moderate rains in the Srinagar city. Reports reaching here said that fresh snowfall has been recorded in the higher reaches of the Kashmir valley. World famous health resort of Gulmarg in North Kashmir witnessed more than six inches of fresh snowfall since Sunday evening. Similar reports of snowfall have come from some other parts of the valley. The MeT department has forecast that higher reaches of Kashmir would receive moderate to heavy snowfall in the next four days. However, much to the relief of the people the 294 kilometers long Srinagar-Jammu national highway remained open with traffic plying from Srinagar to Jammu. |
