AAP wave may not cross into Kashmir
2/16/2015 11:51:00 PM
Encouraged by its massive victory in Delhi Assembly election, where it won 67 out of 70 seats, the AAP has plans of extend its footprint in four states, including Bihar and Punjab. The Aam Aadmi Party is now planning to make itself a significant political force in at least four major states in the next five years without entering into any "arrangements of convenience" with any regional party. The poll results from Delhi have given so much confidence to the AAP that its leadership is planning to convert itself into a national level organization which could prove a suitable alternative to either the Congress or to the BJP or to both.Hence it has no plan to join hands with any regional party, whether it be JD(U) in Bihar or TMC in West Bengal or Peoples' Party of Punjab.Soon after the AAP won the massive mandate from the voters in Delhi supporters of Peoples' party in Punjab, headed by Manpreet Singh, had suggested to the party chief to join hands with AAP which had made inroads in Punjab during the Lok Sabha election when it had won four seats. The AAP leadership does not want people to treat the organization as a regional party as its long term strategy is to become a national party thereby emerging as a national alternative. . That is why the AAP chose Delhi consciously. It wantsto emerge as a principled force in national politics. In next 3-5 years, the AAP wants to become viable in more states than Delhi and Punjab. It treats coalitions like the Third Front as "arrangements of convenience and that is why the AAP will notjoin any such groupings. The AAP leadership has ruled out any understanding with parties like Trinamool Congress and JD(U) which had extended support to AAP in the Delhi polls. "They have not sought political support and even we did not extend political support to them. It was merely a gesture on their part based on their own strengths and weaknesses"according to AAP ideologue, Yogendra Yadav. In fact the AAP wants to extend its area of influence to the BJP ruled states which indicates that the AAP leadership believes that if any party can challenge its supremacy it is the BJP and not the Congress..The AAP leadership believes that since the Congress is on a down the hill journey the AAP has nothing to worry from the Congress party. But despite the fact that the AAP mauled the BJP in Delhi Assembly election giving the saffron brigade just three seats it does see in the BJP its main political rival. Well as far as Jammu and Kashmir state is concerned its political waters may hardly be ruffled by the AAP's bid to register its presence at the national level. The AAP fielded two candidates in the Lok Sabha election in the Kashmir valley. They were Dr Raja Muzaffar Bhat from Srinagar const ituency and Dr Tanveer Maqbool Dar from Anantnag constituency but of them lost their security. Its miserable performance in the Kashmir valley had forced its to avoid fielding its candidates for the December Assembly election.Well it has taken the Congress more than 10 years to register its presence in the valley. And despite being a major political force the BJP or the erstwhile Janata Party or the Jana Sangh had failed to show their existence or presence in the Kashmir valley possibly because of peoples' liking for secular and regionalorganizations.Yes, the AAP can make some inroads in the region of Jammu which has embraced the erstwhile Janata Party and later the BJP.In the 2014 Assembly poll the BJP had won 25 out of 37 seats while in the Kashmir valley it had failed to win even a single Assembly seat. And the AAP can make inroads in the political arena in the region of Jammu if the BJP,the Congress or any of the two regional parties, the NC and the PDP,commit blunders and display their bias against people living in the region of Jammu.Otherwise the region of Jammu has been traditionmal supporters of the BJP,the Congress and to some extent the National Conference. And the only way for the AAP to register its presence in Jammu and Kashmir is its capability to assume power at the national level, thereby meaning the centre. As party in power in the centre the AAP can extend its network to Jammu and Kashmir.
