Early Times Report
Doda, Jan 29: For the first time a bid for a vanity registration number which fetched over Rs 57000/- for number JK06 9000. A total of five bidders had applied for this number and two of them took part in the auction and one Mohammad Shafi of Bariswan Doda emerged as successful bidder to get his choicest number at Rs 57200/-
"The passion for obtaining vanity numbers is growing fast among most of the motorists from Doda and Bhaderwah of Doda district and some are even ready to pay whopping charges for it, official sources said.
They said, "in the wake of the interest of owning a vanity/VIP number for their vehicle among the motorists in region, the Assistant Regional Transport Officer (ARTO) Doda has started displaying all unclaimed VIP vehicle registration numbers on the notice board outside its office for the first time in this hilly district of Jammu and Kashmir.
"This step,' according to the transport office, will ensure transparency in allotment of VIP numbers and will also attract motorists to buy a registration number of their choice.
"Almost every motorist in Doda district now wants vanity number for their new vehicles and to earn revenue, we have kept a price tag for different types of vanity numbers for the first time in ARTO office Doda ," said Azhar Ali Zargar , the Assistant Regional Transport Officer (ARTO), Doda to this correspondent
ARTO Doda Mr Zargar said new vehicles are registered through software known as "Vahan" under which a lot of vanity numbers are kept available to interested people who seek some preferred registration numbers.
"These numbers range from 1 to 100,' he said further adding, "numbers like 000 , 222, 786 and 1234 are in good demand." "These vanity numbers fetch good revenue for the Government, he said and added that the allotment of vanity numbers gets interesting when more than one application is received for a particular number and then the bidding procedure is adopted whoso ever makes highest bid gets the number.
ARTO Doda also informed that special number series scheme for two-wheelers also shall begin at the Assistant Regional Transport Office (ARTO) from this week. "Some people prefer registration numbers similar to their mobile numbers or their birth year or any happy occasion in family while some seek numbers of some religious or numerological significance," he added.
ARTO DOda Mr Zargar also added that they are trying to launch project for online auction of 'VIP' and 'fancy' numbers and work is in progress .The best part of the proposed scheme is that those hunting these fancy numbers don't need to make rounds of transport department offices as these numbers are to be auctioned as part of an online application scheme, he added. Meanwhile motorists visiting the ARTO office have welcomed the step as they can see the VIP numbers available and the amount they have to pay for it. "Earlier, we had to stand in a queue for a long time to just know the availability of a number but now the things are taking a smooth turn courtesy people friendly initiate from ARTO Doda," said Sajid Malik a motorist.
It is notable to mention here that the number that has fetched the highest premium to Jammu and Kashmir in RTO Office Jammu which registers the maximum number of vehicles in the state, was JK02-AK-0047. Why? Because AK-47 has perhaps become one of the best known name or number in J&K after militancy erupted over two decades ago.
