Anti-Jagmohan campaign in Kashmir, BJP ironically silent

Early Times Report
Jammu, Jan 29: Unlike Kashmir, majority Jammu politicians and civil society groups here don’t react even when their intervention is required the most. They hardly react to counter what the Kashmiri separatists, some in NC and others in Kashmir do to tarnish the image of nationalists and harm India.
Take, for example, the ongoing vilification campaign in Kashmir against former Jammu and Kashmir Governor Jagmohan. Ever since January 25, when reports appeared in newspapers that the Union Government had taken a decision to confer Padama Vibhushan on Jagmohan for his great contribution to India, Kashmiri separatists, some NC leaders and the perverted civil society groups in Kashmir have been denouncing the Union Government for its decision to honour the ex-J&K governor.
Srinagar-based Kashmir Centre for Social and Development Studies (KCSDS), which is virtually an extension of Hurriyat Conference, took no time to condemn New Delhi. The very next day (Jan 26), it expressed anger over conferring of Padma Vibushan on Jagmohan. Its spokesperson said: “These malicious attempts are aimed at hurting the sentiments of majority community in Jammu and Kashmir. It seems that the state always waits for a chance to inflict psychological pain and torture on Kashmiris by awarding their killers, rapists, hate mongers and all those who have played a murky role in inflicting indescribable sufferings on the people of Kashmir,” the spokesman said, and added that “history is testimony to the fact that several hundred civilians were killed and thousands injured on the orders of state administration led by Jagmohan in 1990”. His reign in Kashmir will always haunt Kashmiris as the darkest chapter in their history. Coming generations will judge him as a mass murderer responsible for innocent killings and for engineering the mass eviction of Kashmiri Pandit brethren, with Hitlerian designs in mind, he said.
NC general secretary Ali Mohammad Sagar also didn’t lag behind. He virtually spoke the language of KCSDS and termed Jagmohan a butcher. “Whole world knows how Jagmohan butchered people in Kashmir and how he planned and organized things to put people of Kashmir in trouble. He played a major role in mass migration of Kashmiri Pandits from Valley to Jammu,” Sagar alleged. He said that it had become a trend in India to confer awards on political basis. “Jagmohan was the production of pro-communal forces and he also remained Minister during NDA rule. It is absurd on part of India to glorify those who perpetrated crimes in Kashmir,” he told a Kashmir-based news agency on January 26.
On January 27, two more outfits spewed venom on Jagmohan and New Delhi for the same reason. They were the Coalition of Civil Society (CCS) and Jammu Kashmir National Front (JKNF), which is headed by Hurriyat leader and husband of the director of the KCSDS. Nayeem Khan is the chairman of the JKNF. The CCS said: “Consistent to its policy of violence, aggression and arrogance, the Indian government today awarded Padma Vibhushan to former Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, Jagmohan. The award is an appreciation of Government of India for his services, amongst which are massacres and hundreds of killings in Jammu and Kashmir…India installed Jagmohan as the Governor of Jammu and Kashmir second time on January 19, 1990 after dismissing then NC government. He remained Governor till May 26, 1990. He was removed after the killing of Mirwaiz Molvi Mohammad Farooq and the subsequent firing on his funeral procession allegedly by the armed forces in which more than 60 people were killed. The people of Jammu and Kashmir remember Jagmohan as one of the persons responsible for numerous massacres, killings, torture, week-long curfews and crackdown operations”.
As for the JKNF, it, inter-alia, said: “By conferring award to Jagmohan, New Delhi has proved beyond doubt that it is at war with Kashmiri Muslims and it does not lose any opportunity to hurt and insult them. Jagmohan is responsible not only for civilian killings in Kashmir but also Pandits’ eviction. Giving awards to killers like Mome Kane and Jagmohan, India is herself disrespecting its national awards. People like Jagmohan have played dubious role in Kashmiri. Conferring of Padma award on Jagmohan is a malicious attempt to hurt the sentiments of majority of people of the state…By awarding him on her republic day, India has exhibited its utter hate against Kashmiri majority people who know Jagmohan as a murderer and a conspirator”.
It must remain a matter of shame that KCSDS, NC, CCS and JKNF indulged in misinformation campaign. It was not Jagmohan who was responsible for the exodus of the miniscule minority of Kashmiri Hindus from the Valley; it was the separatists, the ‘priestly’ class and the Pakistan-indoctrinated fanatics and terrorists who joined hands to cause their migration from the Valley to convert it into one religion region. A section of the local press in the Valley too had played its part by giving prominent space to the adds that were directed against the hapless Kashmiri Hindus. Only the Kashmiri Hindus know what was done to them by the fanatics.
Similarly, it was not Jagmohan who was responsible for what happened in Kashmir between January 19, 1990 and May 1990. Again, it was the separatists and terrorists who bloodied the Kashmir’s political scene and murdered father of Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Abdul Gani Lone, father of Sajad Lone and Bilal Lone. Jagmohan only discharged his constitutional duties to maintain law and order in the restive Kashmir valley. They should remember what Farooq Abdullah had said about Jagmohan. He had praised him and his role in Jammu and Kashmir.
It was time for the Jammu politicians and civil society groups to counter the malicious propaganda against Jagmohan, but it didn’t do that. Similarly, it must remain a matter of shame for the “nationalist” BJP, which till date has not uttered a word to defend Jagmohan and New Delhi. Perhaps, they believed that their support for Jagmohan might infuriate its Kashmiri masters. The BJP wants to share power with its Kashmiri masters and that’s the reason for its stony silence. It’s very unfortunate.
