ET Report Jammu, Jan 29: Government ignoring doctors while finalizing the list of state awardees has drawn flak. Announcement of awards to several people on the occasion of Republic Day has left some questions unanswered with regard to criteria adopted in conferring such awards and titles to the people from different walks of life. Aspersions have been cast on the objectivity of the procedure being adopted by the government agencies in identifying and shortlisting the awardees. Every year on the occasion of Republic Day, government announces state awards for people with outstanding achievements in chosen fields and also recommends names of men and officers Police and civil administration for awards for gallantry and meritorious service. However, this benevolence of the government has come under scanner with many alleging nepotism in conferring awards due to lack of a transparent and objective criteria. Besides, it is astounding that rarely have the state awards been offered to professionals like doctors and lawyers. "There are many doctors in the state who have been working in pressing constraints selflessly, but they have been rarely recommended for the award" said an aspirant, who did not want to be named. "While government invites applications from citizens who have outstanding achievements, but how the names are shortlisted is not known to anyone" he added seeking a transparent system of nominations. It is pertinent to mention that state awards have been offered to musicians, sportspersons, writers, journalists, social workers, theaterists, bureaucrats, policemen and others, but rarely have the doctors been awarded. |
