Early Times Report

Jammu, Jan 29: Although the Government is spending crores for developing tourist spots in the State, the reckless approach of the Tourism Department to evolve an effective scientific mechanism for disposal of the garbage which is dumped at tourist destinations.
Sources told Early Times that the Tourism Department has awfully failed to formulate full-fledged plan for proper disposal of garbage from the tourist spots thus giving an impression of casual approach of handling the tourism sector notwithstanding incurring gigantic amount for creating infrastructure and spending crores of rupees on publicity in and out of the country on advertisement to attract and fetch maximum numbers of tourists.
They further informed that the lack of infrastructure for waste management in the various Tourism Development Authorities is giving rise to environment hazards and putting the visiting tourists in a tizzy predicaments as the present system of collection, conveyance, treatment and disposal of municipal solid waste, biomedical and hazardous waste in the three Development Authorities including Lakhanpur-Sarthal, Surinsar-Mansar and Kishtwar in Jammu region was awfully inadequate.
"The waste generated was being illegally dumped in the fields openly and hillsides or in the nearby parks by the contractors engaged for sanitation and upkeep of various parks, paths, parking areas, picnic spots etc.
It was observed with dismay that neither the Department of Tourism nor Tourism Development Authorities have initiated to formulate result-oriented plans/ schemes for management of solid waste in the tourist places," they lamented.
Needless to narrate that the Tourism is an imperative mainstay for economic amelioration of the persons involved in the tourism industry as well as the government in the J&K State, the sources explained, further adding that the thrust of the Government to promote Tourism in Jammu and Kashmir can positively yield more encouraging results provided proper management of garbage disposal is made at the tourist spots which plays major role for providing conducive environment to the tourists thronging there for picnic to enjoy leisure time to break monotony of daily preoccupied life.
