SRINAGAR, Jan 29: The likely introduction of Mufti Tasaduq, son of former chief minister Late Mufti Mohammad Sayeed to the fold of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has become one of the factors in the delay of government formation in Jammu & Kashmir. Sources told Early Times that PDP President Mehbooba Mufti wants to give some important position to her brother in the party and the same is not liked by some of her party colleagues. There are members in PDP who believe that Tasaduq should first understand nuances of politics before he is given some important assignment. "If Mehbooba decides to become the chief minister of the state then she would have to leave the chair of PDP President.
As such the party has to find a suitable candidate who would be given the charge of the party and the said person should be close to the Mufti family as well. There are limited options available and as such the decision in this regard would have to be taken while keeping all such things in mind," said sources.
Sources said that names of Muzaffar Hussain Beigh, Mohammad Sartaj Madni and Abdul Rehman Bhat (Veeri) are doing rounds with respect to the post of PDP President. However, the final decision is yet to be taken and it would be known only if and when PDP decides to form the next government in the state.
"If PDP decides not to renew alliance with Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) then there is no need for Mehbooba to step down as the PDP President.
However, if the party decides to form the next government with BJP then only the PDP President would have to find her successor.
As on date Beigh, Madni and Veeri are the best choices available to lead the PDP," said sources. Sources said that if Tasaduq would have been actively involved in politics then there was no problem for Mehbooba since she would have elevated her brother as the next President of PDP. But since that is not the case it has become more difficult for the PDP President to find out her successor.
"Mehbooba wants the baton to be handed over to a person who is loyal to the Mufti family and would not hijack the party for his own means. Since Madni is her maternal uncle she would ideally like him to take over as President of PDP. But the same may not go well with Beigh who is one of the founding members of the party. As such the PDP President is in a fix and it may take some more time in fixing this problem. This can also lead to a situation where Veeri may win the race. Ultimately this would lead to further delay in government formation," said sources. It would be in place to mention here that Tasaduq's presence in core group meeting ruffled many feathers in the PDP. Some of the party members objected to the same and said that Tasaduq should not have been present in the meeting. Since that day Mehbooba too has gone slow with the process of introducing her brother to PDP.
