Terrorists 'above' law but cricket fan can face up to 10 yrs in prison!
1/29/2016 11:21:35 PM
Carrying out a terror strike in Pakistan is a lesser legal offence than being a big fan of Indian cricket team and Virat Kohli.Terrorists and known extremists and fundamentalists roam freely in Pakistan but the same freedom of movement and expression cannot be enjoyed by a 22-year-old Umar Draz, who is simply a tailor by profession, and wanted to demonstrate his support and love for Indian cricket player Virat Kohli. And when India won T-20- match against Australia the other day, Umar Draz was so much impressed by the Kohli's knock of 90 runs, which gave India a chance to win the match, that he hoisted the Indian flag on the rooftop of his house. Just one complaint and he was quickly arrested by police. The speed with which Draz was arrested intrigued all those who support freedom of expression. In fact supporters of freedom of expression were surprised and amazed over the police role in this case while they have been slow against those committing terror crimes and other legal mistakes. Had the same police been active in arresting Hafez Saeed involved in the Mumbai attack of 2008,or against Masood Azhar involved in engineering terror strike on Pathankot air base, the situation in Pakistan would not have been so disturbed but it was not done. After his arrest, he was produced before a court. A die-hard fan of Kohli is now facing up to 10 years of imprisonment for his crime of hoisting the Indian tri-colour atop his house in the Punjab province which he had done to show his love for the cricketer. When produced before it, a district court yesterday sent him to jail on judicial remand. Draz was arrested on January 26 when India beat Australia in a T20 match and Kohli scored 90 runs. Police raided his house on a complaint that he had hoisted the Indian flag on the rooftop of his house.Police registered a case under section 123-A of Pakistan Penal Code and 16 Maintenance of Public Order against him.The Section 123-A (acts of damaging the sovereignty of the country) carries maximum punishment of 10 years in jail or fine or both. Draz pleaded before the judge that he hoisted the Indian flag only because of his love for Kohli. How many boys in Kashmir, who waved Pakistani flags during public rallies or protests have been arrested and jailed? None so far.Yes, police have registered cases against such boys and investigations are on. How ridiculous it sounds. There are others who wave ISIS flags as an expression of anti-India feelings. Does it not amount to damaging the sovereignty of the India? Possibly not in the eyes of the authorities concerned. However, Umar Draz had simply hoisted the Indian flag on his house and not at public places. For his this offence, he could face up to 10 years in prison and a fine. This indicates the anti-India bias on the part of those handling judicial matters or legal procedure. Instead of freeing him, the Pak court has followed the relevant rules. When police acted as per the law of the land, the government should have intervened but it remained silent simply to unnerve those Pakistanis who may, emulate Draz, while expressing their feelings in favour of sportsmen like Kohli, Dhoni,or Yuvi. This is not the way for a democracy to function in a country which has an elected government. Let the government that arrested Draz move fast against terrorists and extremists like Hafiz Saeed and Masood Azhar. If it does so, it would lead to improved ties between India and Pakistan.
