Three Lashkar militants killed in Lolab encounter

KUPWARA, Jan 30: Three militants owing allegiance to Lashar-e-Toiba (LeT) were killed in an encounter in Lolab area of this North Kashmir district. The search operation was going on till the last reports came in.
A senior police official said that acting on a tip off a joint team of security forces including 28 Rashtriya Rifles and special operations group (SOG) launched an operation against militants in Dardapora village of Lolab area in Kupwara district on Friday late evening.
"There was information that two to three foreign militants of LeT were hiding in the area, the area was cordoned after which security forces launched search operation. As the forces were zeroing in, the militants opened fire upon them, triggering an encounter, which continued for various hours," said the official.
The official said that on Friday night a top commander of LeT identified as Abu Usama was killed while as his two associates who had taken shelter in the house of one Shah Zaman in Dardpora village were killed today.
"To prevent the militants from escape, we had tightened the cordon of whole village. However on Saturday early morning a joint team of army's 28 RR along with the additional reinforcement from 18 RR and SOG laid siege around the house following which an encounter ensued in which the two militants were killed," said the police official.
After conducting all legal formalities, the local police handed over the body of the militant Abu Usama to local auqaf committee in Dardpora village for burial where hundreds of people participated in his funeral.
It is believed that, Abu Usama, was a part of the group comprising of three to four members who had infiltrated into this part of Kashmir some six months back and were hiding inside the dense forests of Lolab area, the official said.
Srinagar based defence spokesperson Col N.N Joshi said that three militants have been killed so for and the dead bodies of militants have been retrieved and their identity is being ascertained. Meanwhile the search operation was going on in the area when the last reports came in.
