Drug abuse alarmingly on rise among youths in Udhampur

Udhampur, Jan 30: Drug abuse among youth in Udhampur is of rising concern as besides chewable tobacco, the addiction of poppy straw, Charas and opium etc is alarming among the youths in the Udhampur district. Despite government efforts to create awareness about drug abuse the number of drug addicts is increasing day by day. The alarming trends is visible from the flow of poppy straw (Bukki) at an alarming rate in the last two years and the narcotics drugs like poppy straw (bukki), Charas and the others drugs be it prescription drugs, or Gutkha are increasingly becoming best choice among youth depending on their addiction and want of kick, sources said.
Sources alleged when the law enforcing authorities are busy in other assignments like to counter terrorism the drug lords are taking opportunity and are flowing drugs in the market and these drugs are made readily available at local tea stalls, playing station etc.
Pertinent to mention that in view of demand the drug dealers are smuggling narcotics drugs particularly Charas and Poppy straw from valley and adjoining Doda district to the Udhampur and Jammu district.
According to sources, Police is doing good efforts with the help of internal sources but the narcotics dealers are managing their way.
Sources said the police during its drive against drug peddlers/smugglers have launched massive drive and also had seized narcotics drug besides arresting some of accused from the Udhampur town particularly from Adarsh Colony , Birma Pul, Sallain Talab , CEO Office locality, Shiv Nager etc to check the menace.
Member of a Non Governmental Organization (NGO) against drug addiction, Rinku Gupta said that teen groups are most vulnerable to drug abuse in city. He demanded for special patrolling by police to curb menace and to save youths from drug addiction. He added that Government sponsored schemes of anti-drug abuse campaign should be also implemented by District administration to create awareness about the hazards of drug abuse.
When contacted DySP Gourav Mahajan said, "Police have intensified its drive against drug peddlers within and outside the Udhampur town." He said that police is making sincere effort to save the youth and the future generations from the drug menace so that a better society shall be built up.
