Fearing defections in NC, Omar targets Raj Bhawan
1/31/2016 12:21:00 AM
Early Times Report

JAMMU, Jan 30: NC working president and former J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah is a worried man. For, none of his plans has been working or clicking. He wants PDP president Mehbooba Mufti to again join hands with the BJP so that the PDP further loses its political space in the Valley, but the PDP chief has so far not obliged him. The PDP has even declared that its scheduled meeting in Srinagar on January 31 is not for discussion on government formation. It is for organizational matters, it has said. Besides, the PDP has cancelled its declared Jammu meeting with the local PDP leaders. Not just this. The family of late Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed has vacated the Chief Minister's official residence at Wazarat Road, Jammu, and also surrendered security and official cars. All this has upset the Omar Abdullah's applecart.
In fact, all the actions of the PDP post Mufti Sayeed's demise have confused Omar Abdullah, who left no stone unturned to fish in the troubled waters in J&K after January 7. The nature of his confusion or frustration or fear of defection in his own party could be gauged from his Friday's tweet.
Taking to micro blogging site Twitter, Omar Abdullah said: "Amazing model of 'cooperative federalism' use Raj Bhawans to engineer defections or bully states by threatening to withhold funds". The tweet was referred to formation of new government in J&K, which has been under Governor's Rule since the death of Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed in AIIMS, New Delhi, on January 7. Omar Abdullah reacted to a tweet which said: "Straight forward blackmail by @BJP4India J&K won't get central funds unless it's part of the Govt".
His tweet was nothing but a manifestation of his fear - fear of defection in his own party. There could be no other meaning of what he said in his tweet.
It appears what happened in 1984 still haunts him. That year, many NC MLAs had defected and enabled Sheikh Abdullah's son-in-law and Farooq Abdullah's brother-in-law to form government with the Congress in J&K. His tweet does suggest that there is unrest in his own outfit and his tweet was aimed at pre-empting the possibility of defection from his own party.
In the meantime, his tweet has evoked a sharp response. Some have said Omar Abdullah "failed during his regime while others asked him not to misguide people as Jammu and Kashmir is a sensitive state". Some even wanted to know "does NC's offer of unconditional support to PDP for government formation stands today as well".
