Early Times Report

Srinagar, May 12: The state government has taken cognizance of a report published in Early Times and appointed a deserving applicant to head Islamic University of Science and Technology (IUST) and dropped influential faces of two lobbies of PDP leaders.
On May 5,Early Times published a story under the title "PDP leaders fight it out in Open-Selection of IUST VC" after Highly placed sources had informed ET that two PDP lobbies putting aside deserving applicants were projecting their favorite faces for the Chair of Vice Chancellor (VC) at IUST.
Highly placed sources today informed ET that Chief Minister, Mehbooba Mufti who is also the Chancellor of university taking cognizance of ET Report appointed Professor Mushtaq Sidiqui as the VC-IUST and ruled out suggestions made by PDP leaders to gift Chair to their favorite faces.
Sources had earlier informed that some PDP workers turning down directions of former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Mufti Muhammad Sayeed were proposing ineligible people for the post.
PDP leaders including one Minister in state Cabinet instead following the recommendations of selection committee framed by former Chief Minister, Mufti Muhammad Sayeed according to sources were hell bent to appoint one among their close associates technically ineligible for the post.
Late Mufti Muhammad Sayeed during his tenure as the Chief Minister and had appointed Professor Amitabh Mattoo as Chairman of three member selection committee with former Vice Chancellor of Kashmir university, Professor JaleesTareen and Professor Qazi presently Vice Chancellor of Hamdard University, Delhi to recommend one qualified person on the bases of merit to head IUST.
Sources had informed ET that out of 42 applicants for the post, selection committee had shortlisted 10 applicants as qualified for the post and process of selection remained unbiased.
However after the death of Mufti Muhammad Sayeed process of selection had halted as one PDP lobby was projecting one ineligible female Professor of SKUAST as VC for IUST and another lobby was Projecting nephew of one PDP Minister.
Both the faces according to sources were technically ineligible for the post and hence had created barriers in selection of VC for IUST. Islamic University of Science and Technology at Awantipora was established through an Act No XVIII of 2005 dated 7 November 2005 passed by Jammu and Kashmir State Legislature and notified by the State Government, through Jammu & Kashmir Government Gazette dated: 11-11-2005.
While the University started functioning in November, 2005 the teaching programmes were first started in July 2006.
Pertinently the Chancellor of University is the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir and the executive authority of the University is its Executive Council with the Vice Chancellors of University of Jammu, University of Kashmir and Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University of Rajouri as its members.
Faculty and students alike who were aware of barriers created by Politicians in selection of a deserving applicant as VC for IUST had hailed the timely disclosure of favouritism in selection of VC by ET on an appropriate time.
