Erring cops dent 'people-friendly' image of police

Early Times Report
jammu, May 12: The unlawful activities and anti-people approach of some policemen is bringing a bad name to the entire police department.
Recently a cop outraged the modesty of young girl in custody in the police station. The accused was arrested only after the media reported the matter.
Another case of almost identical nature was reported in the newspapers. A cop heading a post in city area had allowed a man who was allegedly indulging inimmortal activities in a locality adjacent to the post to run away. The cop also implicated an informer in false case in an attempt to shield himself.
These two incidents are the tip of the iceberg. They indicate how the custodians of law and protector of people abdicate their duties and breach law.
People question why their credentials are not scrutinized before posting the cops as Station House Officers. "Why such irresponsible persons are posted on responsible and sensitive positions which is the start point for the complainants to approach for lodging FIR.The conduct of an SHO can make or mar the reputation of the entire police department," said Sham Lal, a senior citizen. He said there certainly is no dearth of honest and sincere officers in the police department."Sensitive and important posts demand sincere and honest officers. These issues need to be addressed by the officers at the helms of affairs," he added.
Swaran Singh of R.S.Pura'sMiran Sahib said that his motorbike parked in front of his residence in a locality was stolen on April 8. He lodged a complaint in writing in the concerned police station on April 9 and when he went to find out the progress of the case after a week, he said he was surprised to find that the police had not lodged an FIR yet.
Singh said when he demanded an FIR, he was asked to submit another application. He refused to do to protest the attitude of the police.
"The police deliberately delays and defers taking action on a complaint. Instead they behave like a judge and hence defeat the very purpose of their assignment," said Madan Sharma.
Many people said the much talked about 'people-friendly'image of police can only be restored if the cops change their behaviour towards the public.
"The thanedars, munshis and SHOs have to shun their arrogance if they want to earn back the trust and confidence of people. The growing gap between police and people will widen further if the police do not entertain FIRs well in time," said the people who spoke to Early Times.
