ZAFAR CHOUDHARY Jammu, March 10: Along with the upcoming Lok Sabha elections a fresh political showdown between ruling coalition and the opposition parties is about to begin in Jammu and Kashmir as the Election Commission of India has rolled out schedule for election to three vacant seats of the state Legislative Assembly. Sonwar and Hazratbal seats in Srinagar were won in 2008 elections by National Conference President Farooq Abdullah and fell vacant early last month upon his election to the Rajya Sabha. Similarly, the Bhaderwah seat in Doda district was won by Congress leader and former Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad and fell vacant upon his election to the Rajya Sabha. According to the Election Commission schedule released today, the election in Bhaderwah constituency will be held April 23, while Srinagar’s Hazratbal and Sonawar constituencies will go for polls May 7. The by-elections will have the same schedule as for the relevant parliamentary constituency, the Election Commission said. The counting will be held May 16. WASHINGTON : In the first high-level contact with the Obama Administration, Foreign Secretary Shivshankar Menon today discussed with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and other officials the progress in the probe into Mumbai attacks and the security situation in the region. Menon, who is on a four-day visit to the US, met Clinton at the State Department and briefed her about the ongoing probe into Mumbai terror attacks, besides exchanging perceptions on counter-terrorism, Afghanistan and the Sri Lankan conflict. Washington, March 10: The Obama Administration is unlikely to mediate on the Kashmir issue and the US policy of non-interference will continue despite calls for greater American involvement, according to a latest Congressional report. The Indo-US ties appear all set to deepen under Obama's presidency notwithstanding apprehensions in some quarters about "potential friction" on issues like Kashmir and nuclear non-proliferation, said the 83-page report on the 'India-US Relations' by the Congressional Research Service (CRS). SALMAN NIZAMI Jammu, March 10: Despite a comprehensive campaign launched by the Power Development Department to realize electricity tariff rationally but there are still staggering gaps between what is actually consumed and what is paid for. According to official information, consumption of electricity in the Kashmir Valley is around 500 to 700 MUs higher than Jammu but the tariff realization trend is on the contrary side.
