In a grim reminder of the pre-2002 era of violence and trouble along the border area, a group of militants struck with impunity in a village of warriors and fighters of this district triggering off a day of bloodshed and mayhem. At end of the day, the death toll mounted to seven including a senior political leader and his wife, a photojournalist, a soldier and militant.
In the ensuing gun battle which continued for nearly seven hours an Army Major and a Superintendent of Police sustained injuries while fighting with militants. Even though many previous lives were lost but the joint operation earned accolades for safe rescue of the civilians taken hostage by the militants.

When the news flashed out early this morning that senior photojournalist Ashok Sodhi has been killed in Samba encounter, many could not believe for Sodhi was usually a late riser and it was unexpected having him there so early in the morning. It was perhaps the last call which took Sodhi away, not only away to Samba but far away and for ever.
Ashok Sodhi’s name, unfortunately, is now in the list of among some 20 journalists who lost their lives while discharging their professional duties in the field or in their offices in nearly two decades of turmoil in Jammu and Kashmir.

While entire attention today remained on the incident of militant violence in Samba district, there was let up in the killings in hilly roads of Doda region.
Eight soldiers of Rashtriya Rifles were killed on Sunday when the army vehicle they were travelling fell into Chenab river in Doda district of Jammu and Kashmir.
A vehicle of Rashtriya Rifles on its way to Doda town skidded off the road and rolled into the river at Ghat area in the afternoon, officials have said.
Three jawans died on the spot and two were injured critically and later died in the hospital. Three others drowned in the river and their bodies were yet to traced, they added.

In solidarity with those innocent people who lost their lives in Samba encounter and to lodge a protest against the incident of barbaric violence, the winter capital city of Jammu will observe a peaceful shot down on Monday.
Major political parties including the BJP, National Conference and Panthers Party have endorsed the shut down call. The call was initially rolled out by BJP.
