| Who is Aslam, by the way? | | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT
Jammu, July 12: The Congress headquarters in New Delhi is peeved over a one-liner letter that dropped out of its fax machine Saturday evening. Leader of Congress Legislature Party (CLP) in a state where they are ruling in partnership, going to media with his resignation from post and saying “I will consult my people on continuing relations with party”, is not a small political disaster by any means. Who is this Choudhary Mohammad Aslam, by the way, who risked his head dashing against the wall?
“Aslam was deeply annoyed but the decision to resign from CLP was purely in cold blood, it was not in a fit of rage and he is happy to have done it”, says a close associate of MLA Surankote and former Speaker of Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly who also remained Minister for Finance and Education and also the President of State Congress. What Congress did with Aslam was not quite unprecedented. Last year Ghulam Rasool Kar, carrying almost same profile as that of Aslam, resigned from party to contest election from Sopore constituency when party denied him ticket. Ka...

| | | | Let Farooq Abdullah resolve the puzzle | | | | Nirbhay Jammual
National Conference President, Dr Farooq Abdullah, has, while referring to the current unrest and violence in the Kashmir valley, blamed the vested interests for inciting people to destablise peace. He has stated that there are elements who are bent upon causing disturbances in Kashmir. These elements want to keep Kashmir on the boil. This way Farooq does not seem prepared to blame the ruling coalition for the mishandling of the situation. He does not seem to hold guilty the security forces of human rights violations that have been the main cause behind the current disturbances and unrest in Kashmir. Whenever there are disturbances vested interests usually take advantage...

| | | | India wary as China draws road through Pak occupied Kashmir | | | | AGENCIES
NEW DELHI: India is wary of Chinese designs to establish strategic link-up with Pakistan in parts of Jammu and Kashmir under occupation by both the countries, saying this could have direct military implications.
The defence ministry's annual report for 2008-09 tabled in Rajya Sabha recently noted with concern the possibility of China "enhancing connectivity with Pakistan through the territory in Jammu and Kashmir, illegally occupied" by both these nations.
While China seized 38,000 sq km in Jammu and Kashmir during the 1962 war with India, Pakistan unilaterally ceded another 5,120 sq km territory it had occupied in 1947-48 to China under a pact in 1963.
However, the annual rep...

| | | | As Chaman puts point rationally, Congress prepares to leave NC isolated | | BANNING INTER-DISTRICT RECRUITMENTS | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT
Jammu, July 12: Amidst and seething discontent among the members of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes over government’s nearly pre-emptive move of banning inter-district recruitments, the ruling coalition partner Congress is reportedly preparing to distance itself from the proposed regressive law even a seasoned BJP leader Prof Chaman Lal Gupta has traced the history of such moves to four decades back. Chaman’s note of dissent to the Joint Select Committee of legislature, which recently wound up its discussions on LA Bill Number 1 of 2009, clearly reflects that the members of reserved categories in Jammu province have been since 1970s pressing for justice as none of...
