Turning point: Baglihar may change destiny of JK

Early Times Reporter Jammu | Sep 7 Coming in as Diwali and Eid gift for the power starved state of Jammu and Kashmir, the possible commissioning of Baglihar Hydro-electric power project is going to be a major milestone in economic development of this state. Of all the disadvantages coming in way of economic development of Jammu and Kashmir, power sector has been major obstacle. The state had to make do with very little availability of power that too to meet the domestic needs and leaving the industrial sector to grapple in the dark. Baglihar power project, which ran into severe troubles of administrative and engineering delays and also major diplomatic problems, has always remained as a biggest hope for meeting the electricity needs. With 450 MW capacity, it is one of the major power projects owned by the state. Therefore, the electricity produced by the Baglihar project will be exclusively for the use of J&K state. Early Times Reporter Jammu | Sep 7 Two top militant commanders and two soldiers were killed in different incidents of insurgency across the state in past 24 hours while a kid lost life to a shell explosion in Poonch district. In Sopore security forces killed two Divisional Commanders of LeT and JeM in two separate encounters in Sopore area. Police in a tip off about the presence of some militants at Warpora Mohalla in Sopore with 179 Bn CRPF and 22 RR rushed towards the spot during the wee hours today and laid a search operation of the area. Nirbhay Jammual Power supply to various areas in Jammu,especially the posh Gandhi Nagar belt,remained snapped for about 22 hours between Friday Afternoon and Saturday morning.The reason was high velocity winds and a brief spell of rain.With power supply off drinking water supply system also collapsed and people had to go without fresh water for over 14 hours.Power engineers took refuge under the storm whenever they were asked to explain the reason for the prolonged shutdown.What about the shutdowns,that too frequent,during fair weather.If anybody has ventured to ask the power engineers about it they take shelter under the established departmental jargon by saying it has been the result o...

Early Times Reporter Jammu | Sep 7 Just a day ahead of the Election Commission of India hears from the political parties of Jammu and Kashmir on timing of assembly elections, which are otherwise due in October, the Peoples Democratic Party has dragged its feet saying that the time is not opportune for going to the polls. Early Times Reporter Jammu | Sep 7 Peoples Democratic Party’s arch rival in the Kashmir Valley, the National Conference too appears in favour of delaying the assembly elections even though the leadership has not made its opinion public. In a television interview the NC President Omar Abdullah said that the elections could be held early next year. “Replying to questions on assembly polls in Kashmir keeping in view the present situation, Abdullah said they were possible by January next year”, a statement issued by the channel said today.
