Srinagar, Mar 11: The District administration has constituted a panel comprising three doctors to probe the circumstances which caused the death of a pregnant woman during operation while delivering her first child in a private nursing home last week.
Deputy Commissioner, Baseer Khan today said that the government has constituted a three-member doctors' team to look into the circumstances which led to the death of 29 year old Rehana Riyaz at Sheikh-ul-Alam Hospital in old city on Monday last.
The expert team which comprises of the doctors from government's SMHS hospital in Srinagar have been tasked to find out the human and infrastructural 'lapses' which led to death of 29-year-old Rehana Riyaz at Sheikh-ul-Alam Hospital in old city, Monday last. "I have asked the experts to come out with a detailed report as soon
as possible," said Khan.
The incident, which has caused outrage in the Valley, has put the spotlight on the functioning of private nursing homes across the state.
Police have already arrested a gynaecologist, Parveena Rashid and an Anesthesiologist, Showkat Rasheed - brother and sister - and charged them under section 304 RPC ( causing death due to negligence). Family of the victim said that the duo forced her to undergo a caesarean a day earlier owing to law and order problems in the city.
"They fled from the nursing home after Rehana died on the operation bed leaving behind the body and the newborn baby, who was fortunately saved," said Firdous Khalid, a relative. Authorities of the Sheikh-ul-Alam Nursing Home, however, claimed that the hospital staff did not flee "but took cover when victim's family
started manhandling them".
"Our job is to ensure that anyone desirous of conducting any surgery at our nursing home is a qualified and registered doctor. And both the gynaecologist and anaesthesiologist are certified doctors and in government service," said an official of the nursing home. Common masses are aghast. "We approach private hospitals to get better service and prompt service. But unfortunately, they have turned into
money churning factories where patients are treated as objects," said Farooq Ahmad Mir, who has now decided to admit his wife in a government hospital for the delivery of their child.
Police officer Shaheedgunj, Showkat Ahmad, who is in-charge investigations, said that the investigations may take some more time. "We are yet to receive the post mortem report of the deceased woman. The doctors have applied for bail but are yet to acquire it,"Ahmad said.
