| Pahalgam village changes into a concrete jungle | | | Mustansir Srinagar, Mar 19 : In the name of developing tourism infrastructure through private investment, the Pahalgam Development Authority (PDA) has clandestinely permitted illegal constructions and acted as an agent for an interest block of wily politicians, bureaucrats and businessmen. This self-serving interest block particularly from the Srinagar city has, unnoticeably managed to get hold of land on the banks of the world famous Lidder Nallah at village Mavar near rafting station. 50% out of the total 86 hotels cum residential hutments constructed on the banks of Lidder near village Mavar have been constructed by Srinagar-based businessmen and bureaucrats depriving the people of their livelihood. Interestingly Mavar village which is ecologically fragile has not been included in the Pahalgam Master Plan due to which the area is witnessing mushroom growth of hotels and hutments endangering the environment and polluting the Lidder valley. The Master Plan for development of Pahalgam was devised in such a way such that it discreetly permitted a construction boom on the left side of the river at Village Mavar , which triggered the defiling of the river and its valley, while as the densely populated habitation of Aru valley has been brought under Master Plan thus banning construction there. The Mavar village is Pahalgam is no more different from that of Sonamerg village where a close relation of a former minister of National Conference has recently grabbed a portion of the state land and constructed an expensive hut on it, and that too without obtaining permission from the government. In Mavar too people having acquaintances with the politicians encroach upon the forest land and have legalize it by purchasing annexed propriety land. The constructions in the village are coming up at such a rapid rate that the meadow of gold will change into a concrete jungle. However, the authorities are unfortunately very insensitive and in certain hand in glove with the Srinagar based business. MLA, Pahalgam, Rafi Ahmad Mir had raised the question of unnoticed constructions at Mavar Rafting Station, however, the government provided him the details of the people who have raised construction in the area but failed to underline the need for imposing checks and balances to stop this illegal and unorganized construction boom in the area which is endangering the fragile ecology of the area. |
